Tesla Model Y remains the best-selling electric car in Germany in 2024

Tesla Model Y remains the best-selling electric car in Germany in 2024

The electric car market in Germany is showing a challenging side in 2024. According to the latest figures from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), new registrations of electric vehicles fell dramatically in August 2024 - a full 69% less than in the same month last year. The number of new registrations of traditional drive types also fell by around 27.8%. Particularly hard hit are manufacturers such as Tesla, VW and Stellantis, which are suffering from the weak demand for e-cars. This raises important questions about the future of electromobility and shows how profoundly developments are affecting the market.

Tesla Model Y: Undisputed leader despite weaknesses

Despite considerable setbacks, the Tesla Model Y remains the best-selling electric car in Germany. With 20,545 new registrations in the first eight months of 2024, it defends its position as the leading model on the German market. However, it also shows Tesla weaknesses: In August, the company saw a 59.2% drop in new registrations. The company has tried to counteract this with price cuts of up to 6,000 euros. Although demand is stagnating, the Model Y remains the bestseller in the German electric car market.

VW: A traditional giant struggles

The VW Group is also affected by the challenges of the electric car market. With 13,214 new registrations of the VW ID.4 and 15,114 new registrations of the ID.3, these models are still among the top electric cars, but sales deteriorated massively in August. The ID.4 suffered an 85.8% drop in new registrations compared to the previous year. The ID.3, VW's compact volume model, also lost momentum and only recorded 869 new registrations in August.

Stellantis and others: Deep slump for the French

The situation at the Stellantis Group is particularly drastic. Brands such as Opel and Peugeot, which were once promising candidates in the e-mobility sector, suffered a drop of 82.1% in August. Stellantis' new electric registrations also fell by almost two thirds over the course of the year as a whole. This clearly shows that the French car giant is feeling the pressure from Asian and German competitors.

BMW and Mercedes: fluctuations among premium manufacturers

BMW and Mercedes have shown a somewhat more stable development in comparison, although they also suffered losses in August. While Mercedes recorded a drop of 59.7% over the course of the year with its EQA model, BMW has been able to increase its sales by 0.8% so far this year. The entry-level BMW iX1 model was particularly successful, although August was also significantly weaker here with a drop of 34.4%.

Chinese brands in reverse gear

Chinese brands such as BYD and MG, which have made strong inroads into the European market in recent years, also experienced a slump in August. In order to anticipate the announced EU tariffs, many new registrations were postponed until the first half of the year. This led to a drop in new registrations of 89.9% at MG in August and 13.2% for the year as a whole.

Challenges in the e-car market in 2024

The slump in new registrations of electric cars shows that the market is currently subject to strong fluctuations. In particular, the loss of government subsidies and uncertainties regarding the economic situation are putting manufacturers under pressure. Nevertheless, the electric car market remains an important part of the future of mobility, and models such as the Tesla Model Y or the VW ID.4 will continue to dominate, even if they are currently suffering setbacks. Manufacturers must now develop new strategies to overcome the challenges and remain successful in the long term.
