Tesla Update: Improved blind spot warning protects when opening doors

Tesla has introduced an exciting new feature in China with the 2024.26.9 update: an improved blind spot warning that warns of obstacles when opening the vehicle doors. This new feature is exclusive to the Model 3 Highland and the Cybertruck and could be a significant step towards increased safety.

Blind spot warning: a smart safety feature

With the latest software version Tesla in China has released a function that makes opening doors safer. This new blind spot warning detects obstacles such as cars, pedestrians, cyclists and other objects that may be close to the vehicle door. As soon as the door handle button is pressed, a red LED in the front speaker area lights up to visually warn the driver and front passenger.

This feature is particularly useful in busy urban areas where parked cars are often surrounded by cyclists or pedestrians. The feature is exclusive to the latest models - the Model 3 Highland and the Cybertruck - which are equipped with these special warning lights in the front loudspeaker grilles.

How does the warning work?

As soon as the function is activated in the vehicle settings under Controls > Safety the system continuously monitors the area around the vehicle. If a driver or front passenger presses the door handle button, the vehicle scans the surrounding area for possible obstacles. If an object is detected, a red LED lights up as a warning. Interestingly, there is currently no audible warning or display on the screen, which means that drivers have to pay particular attention to the light coming on.

What is recognized as an obstacle?

According to Tesla the system recognizes a variety of objects, including cars, pedestrians, cyclists and "other objects". While Tesla has not specified exactly what falls under "other objects", it can be assumed that these are traffic cones, barriers or similar large obstacles that are also detected by the Full Self-Driving technology.

Looking to the future: further improvements to be expected?

Tesla is known for continuously improving its features, and it is likely that future updates will further refine the blind spot warning. One interesting possibility would be to use the existing ambient light band inside the vehicle to make the warning even clearer for the driver and passengers. An acoustic signal would also be a useful addition to further increase safety.

Exclusively for China - when will it come to Europe?

The improved blind spot warning is currently only available in China. It remains to be seen when and if this function will also come to Europe. Tesla In the past, however, the company has often tested safety features in one market first before rolling them out globally. There is therefore every hope that European Tesla-drivers will also benefit from this innovation in the near future.

A small feature with great potential

The improved blind spot warning from Tesla shows once again how the car manufacturer aims to increase road safety with well thought-out features. Especially in busy cities, this function could prevent potential accidents and further increase comfort for the occupants. We are excited to see what other innovations Tesla will be introduced in future updates.
