Tesla has announced its first recall of 2025. Affected are about 239,382 vehicles in the USA and others in Canada. As with most Tesla-recalls, the problem is largely solved via a Over-the-Air (OTA)-software update, but in some cases hardware components may need to be replaced.
Which vehicles are affected?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects the following models:
- Model 3 (2024-2025)
- Model S (2024-2025)
- Model X (2023-2025)
- Model Y (2023-2025)
What is the problem?
The affected vehicles are equipped with the Hardware 4 (HW4)-computer, which is responsible for a number of critical functions. Reports from vehicle owners indicate that a short circuit in the HW4 computer can lead to a chain reaction that triggers the following problems:
- GPS failures
- Unresponsive displays and cameras
- Deactivated driver assistance systems
The recall itself focuses on the reversing cameraas these problems violate the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS 111) and can increase the risk of accidents.
Solutions: OTA updates and hardware replacement
Tesla started in December 2024 to solve the problem with a software update to address it. This update modifies the vehicle's power-on sequence to prevent the short circuit in the computer's power components. Affected updates include:
- 2024.44.25.3
- 2024.45.25.6
- Newer versions
For vehicles that are already affected by an HW4 failure Tesla offers a free replacement of the computer. Vehicles that have been replaced after the December 16, 2024 are already equipped with the revised hardware and updated software.
Influence of weather conditions
Interestingly, cold weather conditions seem to exacerbate the failures. Low temperatures can cause the low-voltage battery below the operating threshold, making the HW4 computer more susceptible to failure.
Conclusion: A proactive approach
This recall demonstrates Tesla's ability to quickly identify problems and largely resolve them through software solutions. Nevertheless, hardware replacement remains unavoidable in some cases, especially for vehicles that are already malfunctioning.
