Tesla Model YRedesign divides opinion - What's new?

Tesla has the revised Model Y 2025 and sparked a debate among fans and critics. The world's best-selling electric SUV has been comprehensively redesigned for the first time since its debut in 2020 and now offers a mixture of technical upgrades, new designs and increased range. However, opinions on the redesign are divided.

What's new with the Model Y 2025?

The Model Y 2025 shares some design features with the 2023 introduced Model 3 Highlandbut also has unique features that set it apart:

  • New look: Revised front end with a slimmer bumper, new headlights and an LED light strip that is attached to the Cybertruck reminiscent of the Cybertruck.
  • Rear design: A continuous LED tail light with indirect reflection that extends across almost the entire width of the vehicle.
  • Improved aerodynamics: The new design is intended to optimize efficiency and range.

The interior remains Tesla remains true to its minimalist style, but integrates innovations such as a slightly enlarged 15.4-inch touchscreen display, an additional 8-inch display for the rear seats and a new sound system with concealed speakers.

Performance and range: improvements in detail

Tesla states that the Model Y is now faster and more efficient than its predecessor:

  • Acceleration:
    • Standard RWD: 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds (one second faster).
    • Long Range AWD (Launch Edition): 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.
  • Range:
    • Standard RWD: Up to 593 km (CLTC).
    • Long Range AWD: Up to 719 km (CLTC).

The range figures are based on the Chinese CLTC cyclewhich differs from the US EPA calculation method.

Divergent opinions in the Tesla-community

While many fans are excited about the new functions and design, there is also criticism. Particularly on platforms such as Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), the look of the new Model Y is hotly debated:

  • "The rear has Pontiac Aztec vibes. The front is fine, but let's see what it looks like in real life," says one Reddit user.
  • Others criticize the interior design as "too plain and cheap."

Celebrities Tesla-commentators such as Sawyer Merritt remain optimistic and remind us that many Tesla-designs were polarizing at first, but eventually found their fans.

Market launch and prices

The Model Y 2025 is currently only available in selected markets in Asia and Australia. Deliveries will start in April or May 2025, depending on the region, and prices will vary:

  • Australia: From AUD 63,400 (~USD 39,300) for RWD, AUD 73,400 (~USD 45,500) for AWD.
  • China: From 263,500 CNY (~35,935 USD) for RWD, 303,500 CNY (~41,390 USD) for AWD.

Conclusion: Pioneering, but controversial

The Model Y 2025 shows Tesla's innovative spirit with technical improvements and increased efficiency. Whether the design will win over fans in the long term remains to be seen. But the past has shown: Tesla-models sometimes need time to inspire.
