Tesla Overtakes Audi in global sales in 2024

Tesla has overtaken Audi in global sales for the first time in 2024 - a milestone that significantly changes the dynamics of the luxury car market.

Tesla's success figures: Fewer models, more sales

With a total of 1.79 million vehicles delivered has Tesla ahead in 2024, although this corresponds to a slight decline of 1,1 % compared to the previous year. Audi, on the other hand, was only able to 1.67 million vehicles sold - a decrease of 12 %. This exceeds Tesla the German premium manufacturer for the first time.

What makes this achievement particularly remarkable is Tesla's focused product range. Tesla Tesla only offers four models worldwide: Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y. In addition, the recently introduced Cybertruckwhich is currently only available in the USA and Canada. Audi, on the other hand, has a widely diversified model range that includes electric, hybrid and combustion vehicles.

Reasons for Audi's decline in sales

Audi's sales difficulties can be attributed to several factors:

  1. Decline in demand for luxury vehicles in China
The Chinese market, one of the biggest growth drivers in the automotive industry, is showing falling demand for vehicles from foreign manufacturers. Instead, local brands are gaining market share.

  2. Competitive pressure in the EV segment
Audi's electric vehicle sales fell by 8 % which points to increasing competition in both Europe and China. Tesla's leading position and the presence of Chinese EV manufacturers are putting pressure on Audi.

  3. Reduced subsidies in Europe
The cuts to EV subsidy programs in Europe have also contributed to the cooling of the market. This is hitting Audi harder as it is still in the transition phase towards a fully electric portfolio.

Audi's strategy for the future

To reverse the downward trend, Audi is focusing on a renewal of the model range. The recently launched models A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron as well as the increased presence of the AUDI brand in China should turn the tide. The partnership with SAIC in China, which is set to launch three new medium to large-sized electric vehicles, is particularly important.

Furthermore, Audi's focus on the electrification of its model range remains a central component of its future strategy. However, the closure of the Brussels plant that produced the Q8 e-tron indicates that Audi needs to streamline its production in order to become more profitable.

Tesla's secret to success

Tesla's success is based on a combination of innovative productsa global store network and a clear brand strategy. The models are tailored to efficiency and customer requirements, while the absence of a broad model range reduces costs and complexity. With the introduction of the Cybertruck and continued investment in new technologies, the Tesla is well positioned to further expand its leading role in the automotive industry.
