Tesla Accessory Power: 12V connections return

Tesla listens to its customers and reintroduces 12V outlets with the new "Accessory Power" option, which can remain active even when the vehicle is turned off. This feature solves the problem that when the vehicle is turned off, the 12V sockets – previously essential for accessories like vehicle refrigerators – were deactivated.

Background and Issues

A few months ago, Tesla deactivated the 12V outlets when the vehicle was inactive to prevent abusive modifications that could lead to dangerous situations. This affected all models, including the popular Model Y.

  • Effects:
Accessories like refrigerators that relied on the 12V outlets were no longer usable, which frustrated many Tesla owners.

  • Previous Workaround:
The only option so far was the Camp Mode – but with disadvantages like activated climate system and deactivated walk-away locks.

The New Accessory Power Option

With the new "Accessory Power" option, users can continue to activate the 12V outlets and USB ports even when the vehicle is turned off.

  • Functionality:
Once the option is activated under Controls > Charging > Keep Accessory Power On, the entire power supply for accessories remains active – both for the 12V socket and the optional 12V-Max-16A connection (if available).

  • Operating Limit:
The function remains active as long as the battery level is above 20%. If the battery level falls below this, Accessory Power is automatically deactivated to protect the vehicle.

Benefits of the New Feature

  • Energy Efficiency:
Compared to the previous solution via Camp Mode, the Accessory Power option uses significantly less energy, as the entire climate system does not remain permanently active.

  • Comfort and Flexibility:
Users can charge and operate their devices and accessories such as refrigerators or laptops even when the vehicle is parked – ideal for road trips and longer stays outside the car.

  • User-Friendliness:
Activation is easy to set up via the Tesla app and the vehicle menu, ensuring seamless access to the ports.

Models and Availability

The new feature will initially be implemented in the current Tesla models:

  • Model Y & Model X:
In these models, 12V ports are already available in the rear (for Model X) and in the front.

  • Model S & Model 3:
These models come standard with USB ports and a 12V port in the front.

  • Cybertruck:
As the only Tesla model, the Cybertruck currently also offers 110V ports.

Conclusion

The introduction of the Accessory Power Option is a welcome step that makes everyday life easier for many Tesla owners. With this feature, users can operate their favorite devices and accessories even when the vehicle is turned off – a customer-friendly improvement that shows Tesla continuously responds to feedback and develops innovative solutions.
