Two giants of the tech world are facing off in the race for supremacy in autonomous driving: Tesla and Waymo. Both companies are pursuing different approaches to revolutionize the market for driverless cars - but they have different hurdles to overcome. While Waymo is scoring points with an early lead in practice, the Tesla is relying on the strength of its software and the sheer mass of its vehicle fleet. But who will win the race in the end?
Waymo's lead: autonomous driving in city traffic
Waymo, a subsidiary of Google's parent company Alphabet, was able to establish itself early on in the field of autonomous driving. With around 700 robotaxis on the road in cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin, Waymo has proven that its technology works in real urban traffic. These robotaxis transport around 100,000 passengers a week - an impressive figure that shows how far Waymo has already come with its autonomous technology.
Founded in 2009, Waymo benefits from Alphabet's financial resources and technological infrastructure. The company relies on a strong sensor set for navigation, using both cameras and lidar (light detection and ranging) to create precise maps of its surroundings. Some analysts are of the opinion that Waymo is "playing chess while Tesla checkers" - an indication that Waymo has more strategic staying power and a more thoughtful approach.
Tesla relies on software: a question of scale
Tesla on the other hand, is taking a different approach. In recent years, Elon Musk's company has brought millions of vehicles onto the market that are equipped with so-called "Full-Self Driving" (FSD) software. Tesla The company relies entirely on a camera-based solution to record the vehicle's surroundings and make decisions - a decision that has been criticized by some experts.
The former Tesla-AI director Andrej Karpathy, who is also a co-founder of OpenAI, remains optimistic, however, that Tesla has set the right course. In a podcast, he explained: "I think that Tesla has a software problem and Waymo has a hardware problem." Karpathy is alluding to the fact that Tesla's autonomous driving system is not yet fully developed, while Waymo's system already works, but is very expensive to produce and operate. In his opinion, software problems can be solved more quickly and easily than hardware problems.
Waymo vs. Tesla: Incomparable concepts?
Some industry experts are of the opinion that Tesla and Waymo are difficult to compare, as the two companies are on different paths. While Waymo has already integrated driverless cabs into road transportation, Waymo is Tesla is still in the process of further developing its FSD software to enable fully autonomous driving. Critics such as Dan O'Dowd, founder of The Dawn Project, argue that Tesla is still a long way from offering a truly autonomous vehicle. Waymo, on the other hand, has proven that its technology already works.
On the other hand, Waymo is accused that the high cost of their autonomous systems - especially the lidar sensors and complex mapping technology - could make scaling difficult. Former software engineer Kevin Chen explained that the cost of hardware and maintenance could become a financial problem for Waymo in the long term. In contrast to Tesla, which relies on machine learning and AI, Waymo must continue to find the balance between high operating costs and technological development.
A look into the future: who will prevail?
Both companies have their strengths, but also their challenges. Waymo may currently be ahead in terms of functionality, but Tesla has the advantage of a global fleet of millions of vehicles that are already collecting data and continuously improving the system. Tesla could therefore gain the upper hand in the medium term if it succeeds in perfecting the software and bringing autonomous driving to the mass market.
Waymo, on the other hand, will have to continue to work on reducing its high operating costs and ensuring the scalability of its fleet. It remains to be seen which company will prevail in the long term - the future of autonomous driving is far from decided.
