Panasonic starts mass production of 4680 batteries for Tesla

Panasonic has officially started mass production of the new 4680 battery cells for Tesla which represents an important milestone for the electric car industry. Production, which will initially take place at the Wakayama factory in Japan, will also be expanded to a new 4 billion dollar facility in Kansas in the future. These battery cells, which have been specially developed for Tesla's vehicles, are intended to significantly increase the efficiency and range of electric cars while reducing production costs.

Revolutionary battery technology for more affordable electric cars

The 4680 battery cells, named after their dimensions of 46 millimeters in diameter and 80 millimeters in length, offer five times more capacity than the previous 2170 cells. This increase in capacity makes it possible to increase the range of electric vehicles while using fewer battery cells for the same amount of energy. This leads to more efficient production and lower costs, which is particularly important for Tesla's new models such as the Cybertruck.

Panasonic has made a commitment, Tesla to prioritize the supply of these new cells to meet the increasing demand for high-performance batteries. These batteries will not only be used for the Cybertruck, but also for other models of Tesla models, paving the way for more affordable electric cars.

Advantages of the 4680 cells: Higher efficiency and lower costs

The new batteries offer significant advantages over previous technologies. Their larger size makes it possible to reduce the number of welding points, which increases production speed. They can also act as a structural component of the battery pack, which increases the volumetric density and stability of the battery. The combination of these factors means that electric vehicles can be produced with less effort and lower costs.

Another advantage of the 4680 cells is the possible integration of so-called dry electrode technology, which enables additional cost savings by eliminating expensive wet coating processes. Tesla has already started to drive forward the mass production of this dry electrode technology in order to further reduce battery costs and increase the competitiveness of its vehicles.

The future of electric cars: greater range and lower prices

Panasonic sees the mass production of 4680 cells as an important step towards making electric cars more affordable for the masses. According to Kazuo Tadanobu, CEO of Panasonic Energy, this technology will make a significant contribution to the spread of electric vehicles. The partnership between Panasonic and Tesla shows how innovative battery technologies can help drive the energy transition and make the mobility of the future sustainable.

4680 cells as a game changer for Tesla's electric vehicles

With the introduction of the 4680 battery cells by Panasonic Tesla will be able to reduce its production costs while improving the range and efficiency of its electric vehicles. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the next generation of electric cars and facilitate access to affordable, sustainable mobility.
