Saia, a logistics company with over 100 years of tradition in freight transportation, has integrated two Tesla Semis into its fleet. This adds Saia to the list of companies testing Tesla's Class 8 electric trucks before mass production.
Comprehensive tests before integration
Before the Tesla Semis were integrated into active operation, Saia subjected the vehicles to intensive testing. Range, payload capacity, gradient performance and driver comfort were put under the microscope - with impressive results. According to Patrick Sugar, Executive Vice President of Operations at Saia, the Tesla Semis achieved an efficiency of 1.73 kWh per milea value that is in line with previous tests and those of Tesla announced figures.
Positive driver feedback
Not only the technical data was convincing, but also the feedback from the drivers. The smooth acceleration, the comfortable interior and the ability to maintain speed even on steep climbs with heavy loads were particularly praised. "Our drivers were delighted with the performance of the Tesla Semi's performance - both on local and longer journeys," says Sugar.
Tesla Semi active in California
The Tesla Semis from Saia are currently stationed in California and are already in real operation. Interestingly, the vehicles went undetected for over a month before Dan Priestley, Senior Manager for Semi Truck Engineering at Tesla, confirmed their use on X.
Another step towards mass production
Saia is not the only company to rely on the Tesla Semi. In addition to Saia, PepsiCo, Costco, Walmart, Sysco, US Foods, DHL and Martin Brower have also already Tesla Semis in operation. Tesla is currently working on a production facility for the Semi in the Gigafactory Nevada. This should be completed by 2025 so that mass production can begin in early 2026. A capacity of 50,000 Semis per year.
The future of logistics
With a combination of efficiency, driver comfort and sustainable technology, the Tesla Semi marks the beginning of a new era in freight transportation. Saia and other companies are paving the way for a more climate-friendly logistics industry.
