Tesla Model Y overtakes Nissan Leaf as the most registered e-car in Norway

Tesla Model Y overtakes Nissan Leaf as the most registered e-car in Norway

The Tesla Model Y has officially overtaken the Nissan Leaf as the most newly registered electric car in Norway. As of September 8, 2024, exactly 59,775 Tesla Model Y new registrations in just three years. The Nissan Leaf, which was launched over 13 years ago, held this record for a long time with a total of 58,860 new registrations. This development illustrates the enormous influence of the US electric car manufacturer on the Norwegian market and the increasing demand for models from Tesla.

Continuous success for Tesla in Norway

In recent years, the Model Y celebrated great success in Norway. It was the best-selling car across all drive types in 2022 and 2023, underlining the growing popularity of the vehicle in the Scandinavian country. In the current year 2024, the Model Y strong. In the first eight months, 10,683 new vehicles were registered, which once again puts it at the top of the registration statistics across all vehicle types. In August 2024 alone, 2,107 new registrations were added.

Although these figures are impressive, they represent a decline of 37.5% compared to the same period last year. This shows that demand for the Model Y is fluctuating slightly despite its continued success, possibly due to market saturation or growing competition.

Tesla dominates new electric car registrations

Tesla is not only due to the Model Y successful. In the long-term statistics for new registrations since 2011, the Tesla third place with the Model 3, which recently overtook the VW e-Golf. With 43,910 newly registered Model 3 is Tesla well ahead of other electric car manufacturers such as Volkswagen, BMW and Audi in Norway. From January to August 2024, the Model 3 even recorded an increase of 79.9 percent compared to the previous year. These figures make it clear that Tesla even with its compact Model 3 is strongly represented on the market.

Nissan Leaf: still the leader in existing vehicles, but no longer in new registrations

Interestingly, despite losing the title of new registrations, the Nissan Leaf is still the most popular electric car in the Norwegian fleet. With a total of 69,108 vehicles, the Leaf surpasses the Tesla Model Y, which has a stock of 60,202 vehicles. This difference is the result of used car imports, which are not included in the new registration figures. A total of 21,727 Nissan Leaf used cars have been imported into Norway in the last 13 years.

The future of e-mobility in Norway

Norway is one of the world's leading markets for electric cars, and Tesla plays a central role in this. With the steadily growing popularity of models such as the Model Y and the Model 3 shows Tesla, that it is leading the electric car revolution. However, competition remains strong and manufacturers such as Volkswagen, BMW and Audi are also holding their own in the market with their electric vehicles.

The Tesla Model Y has now proven that it is not only successful in the USA and China, but also dominates in Europe, especially in Norway. It remains to be seen how sales figures will develop in the coming years and whether Tesla can further extend its market leadership.
