Tesla Giga Berlin has reached an important milestone: Last week, the 500,000th Model Y was produced – an event that takes place just a few days after the three-year anniversary of the factory opening. This success marks the continuous production ramp-up and the transformation that the German Gigafactory has experienced since its opening.
A look back at Giga Berlin
Construction work for Giga Berlin began in 2020, accompanied by numerous bureaucratic challenges and protests from environmental activists. After initial delays, the factory was finally officially opened on March 22, 2022 – a moment attended personally by CEO Elon Musk.
Rising production numbers
Although Giga Berlin ramped up more slowly compared to Giga Shanghai, the production rate has continuously improved:
-
June 2022: 1,000 Model Y per week
-
October 2022: 2,000 units per week
-
December 2022: 3,000 units per week
-
February 2023: 4,000 units per week
-
March 2023: 5,000 units per week (equivalent to an annual production volume of approximately 250,000 vehicles)
Initially, the factory exclusively produced the high-priced Model Y Performance variant. Shortly thereafter, production was expanded to the Model Y Long Range, so Giga Berlin currently manufactures two variants – Rear Wheel-Drive (RWD) and Long Range. The Performance variant was temporarily discontinued and is expected to be reintroduced later this year.
Future prospects and expansion
Tesla plans to further expand Giga Berlin to achieve an annual production of over 1 million vehicles in the long term. This step underscores Tesla's commitment to strengthening production in Europe and optimally serving the growing European market.
Conclusion
With the production of the 500,000th Model Y, Giga Berlin marks a significant success in just three years of operation. The continuous increase in production numbers and the planned expansion of capacities show that Tesla continues to focus strongly on growth in Europe – and that the future of electromobility in Germany is in good hands.
