Tesla China: Record monthly sales with 74,127 domestic sales
Tesla China shows that the market is recovering – in March 2025, an impressive 74,127 vehicles were sold in the domestic market. This figure represents a strong increase of 18.8% compared to the same month last year and a spectacular jump of 176.8% compared to February 2025. This sales growth follows a slow phase at the beginning of the year, due to a production shift to the new Model Y at the Gigafactory Shanghai.
Production and sales successes in China
According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), a total of 78,828 vehicles were distributed in March, of which 4,701 units were exported to other markets. Tesla often focuses on export sales at the beginning of a quarter before shifting the focus to domestic deliveries – and this is reflected in the current figures.

Model Y dominates:
Of the total 78,828 vehicles, 49,029 were Model Y models sold, while 29,799 vehicles were attributed to Model 3. Although sales of the Model Y decreased by 14.9% compared to the same month last year, the month-over-month increase of 510.4% (from just 8,032 units in February) shows the positive impact of the introduction of the new Model Y in China. -
Model 3 developments:
The Model 3 recorded a more moderate decline of 5.3% compared to March 2024, but at the same time an increase of 31.5% compared to February.
Overall situation and outlook in Q1 2025
In the first quarter of 2025, Tesla China achieved a total of 134,607 domestic sales, accounting for about 40% of the global deliveries of 336,681 units. However, these Q1 figures are 31.6% lower than in Q4 2024, mainly due to the early production shift. Additionally, Tesla's Shanghai plant exported 38,147 vehicles in the quarter – a decline of 56.9% compared to the previous year.
The strong increase in domestic sales in March shows that Tesla China is gaining momentum again. With the introduction of new, market-aligned models and the continuous increase in production capacities, Tesla is optimally positioned in the world's largest automotive market.
Conclusion
The impressive performance in March 2025 suggests that Tesla is gaining momentum again in China – despite the challenges of production changes at the beginning of the year. With the increased sales of the new Model Y and solid overall figures in the first quarter, Tesla China remains a key growth market. The current development suggests that Tesla could further increase production and sales successes in the coming quarters, thus paving the way for a strong future in the world's largest automotive region.
