Tesla RWD Cybertruck debuts in the USA – Important features are missing

After the successful launch of the Long Range RWD Cybertruck variant in Saudi Arabia, Tesla has now officially introduced the RWD version in the USA. This model was specifically developed for a lower price and simplified equipment – but at the expense of some key features that have made the Cybertruck so distinctive in the past.

Changed Specifications and Stripped-Down Features

The new RWD Cybertruck offers a range of 350 miles, which can even increase to up to 362 miles with the optional soft tonneau cover. The acceleration time from 0 to 60 mph is 6.2 seconds – solid, but not the fastest model in Tesla's portfolio. Unlike the all-wheel drive (AWD), the RWD forgoes adaptive air suspension, making it the first Cybertruck equipped with conventional coil suspension. This has direct impacts on the payload, which decreases from 2,500 lbs in the AWD model to 2,007 lbs. Likewise, the towing capacity is reduced from 11,000 lbs to 7,500 lbs, which might be a decisive factor for some customers.

Interior Adjustments and Reduced Comfort Features

To lower the price, Tesla has also made cuts in the interior. The rear screens have been removed, and the seats are now made of fabric instead of premium leather – losing ventilation, while the front seats remain heated. Additionally, the sound system has been reduced from 15 to 7 speakers including a subwoofer, which also means the removal of active noise cancellation. The HEPA filter, Bio-Weapon Defense mode, and the two 120V outlets in the interior have also been eliminated.

Changes to the Cargo Area

In the cargo area, the controls specific to the Cybertruck are omitted: The control units in the cargo area, such as the controls for the L-Track and LED light strips, have been replaced by simpler LED lamps. The rear light, a hallmark of the previous Cybertruck, has been removed – only the brake light and turn signal output remain. The front lights have also been changed from the distinctive Tesla look to standardized headlights.

Available Options and Pricing

In terms of options, Tesla focuses on standardization: The base model wheels are 18 inches, while optional 20-inch Cyber Wheels are available for an additional $3,500. Additionally, the FSD package (Full Self-Driving) is available for early reserved customers for $7,000 – for other buyers, it costs an extra $8,000. The soft tonneau cover, which improves the range by up to 12 miles, is not standard but is available separately in the Tesla shop for $750.

Price-wise, the RWD Long Range Cybertruck starts at 69,990 USD, or 62,490 USD after considering the state EV incentive program. The model is primarily aimed at buyers looking for a robust and economical truck for adventures and light towing work, although the reduced performance in towing capacity and payload is viewed critically.

Availability and Outlook

The delivery of the new RWD Cybertruck in the USA is expected to begin in June/July 2025, while other markets like Canada and Mexico are expected to follow in the coming weeks or months. Despite the pared-down features, the lower price could position the Cybertruck as an attractive option for customers who particularly value lightweight construction and range.
