USA: Kia EVs will have access to the Tesla Supercharger network

From January 15, 2025, Kia electric vehicles in the USA will have access to the Tesla Supercharger network. This is an important step for Kia, as the South Korean car brand is following in the footsteps of Ford, Rivian and General Motors by signing an agreement with Tesla to utilize the extensive DC fast charging network with over 16,500 charging points in the US.

Free adapter for some Kia drivers

Customers who purchased a new Kia EV6 or EV9 after September 6, 2024 can rejoice: they will receive a free adapter that will give them access to the Tesla Supercharger network. Delivery of these adapters is planned for early 2025. However, buyers of Kia models purchased before this date will have to pay for the adapter. The exact price is not yet known, but similar adapters from other manufacturers cost around 225 US dollars.

Different adapter types for different charging needs

Kia will offer three different adapter types to meet the different needs of users:

  1. NACS to CCS1: For Kia vehicles equipped with a Tesla-connector (NACS) to charge at CCS1 fast charging stations.
  2. CCS1 to NACS: For existing Kia vehicles with the CCS1 connector to charge the Tesla Supercharger network.
  3. J1772 to NACS: For charging at nonTesla-AC level 2 chargers that have the J1772 connection.

With these options, Kia ensures that both current and future EV models can be seamlessly integrated into the existing charging network.

NACS: The new standard for Kia

Kia will begin charging its electric vehicles in North America from 2025 with the NACS connection from Tesla connection. This will initially apply to models such as the Kia EV6, followed by other models such as the EV9. The NACS connector, which is Tesla is more compact and is increasingly being adopted as the standard in North America, which has prompted Kia to abandon the CCS1 connection.

Charging via the Kia Access App

As soon as Kia vehicles have access to the Tesla Supercharger network, customers will be able to manage charging via the Kia Access App. This will only require a software update of the vehicle to enable payment and management of charging processes. Separate use of the Tesla-app will not be necessary.

Pioneering partnership

With this move, Kia is demonstrating that it is responding to the growing demand for fast and efficient charging infrastructure. By gaining access to the Supercharger network, Kia will offer its customers a significantly improved charging experience. This is a crucial step in further reducing range anxiety and advancing electric mobility in the US.
