Fewer new registrations, significant shifts in drive systems and manufacturers
The year 2024 ended with a slight decline in vehicle registrations in Germany. In total 2.8 million new cars registered - a decrease of 1.0 percent compared to the previous year. December 2024 was particularly weak, with 224,721 newly registered passenger carswhich represents a decrease of 7.1 percent compared to December 2023. Developments in alternative drive systems and brand shares were particularly striking, with Tesla one of the losers of the year.
General overview: German and import brands in comparison
While some brands such as VW, Opel and Porsche were able to record growth, others such as BMW, Mercedes and above all Mini declines. VW remains with a market share of 19.1 percent the dominant brand in Germany. Among the import brands Peugeot (+44.0 %) and Volvo (+39.3 %) recorded significant growth, while brands such as Tesla (-41.0 %) and Polestar (-49.4 %) suffered severe declines.
Alternative drives on the rise
The registration figures for alternative drive types show an interesting trend:
- Hybrids: With 947,398 new registrations and an increase of 12.7 percent they achieved a share of 33.6 percent. Among them were 191,905 plug-in hybrids (+9,2 %).
- electric cars (BEV): Despite a decline of 27.4 percent were 380,609 Electric vehicles registered, which corresponds to a share of 13.5 percent share.
- Gasoline: The share rose slightly to 35.2 percent (+1,4 %).
- Diesel: Slight decline in 17.2 percent share (-0.7 %).
The growing importance of hybrids and the decline in pure electric cars reflect the uncertainties among consumers - particularly due to the reduction in state subsidies for BEVs.
Tesla: A difficult annual balance sheet
Tesla recorded a dramatic decline in 2024 41.0 percent in registrations and comes to just 37,574 new registrationswhich corresponds to a market share of 1.3 percent market share. In comparison, brands such as Toyota (+27.0 %) and Skoda (+22.0 %) made significant gains.
Tesla lost market share in the electric segment in particular, which is attributable to several factors:
- The discontinuation of state subsidies for electric cars.
- Growing competition from more affordable models such as the Dacia Spring or new brands such as BYD.
- Decline in demand for more expensive models such as the Model S and Model X.
The models Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y remain popular vehicles in the electric segment, but price pressure from other manufacturers and the limited product portfolio make Tesla are causing problems.
Conclusion: mixed picture for new registrations in 2024
The year 2024 was characterized by an overall stable market with slight declines. Alternative drive systems such as hybrids continue to gain in importance, while purely electric cars face challenges. Tesla The automotive industry faces the task of redefining its position in an increasingly competitive market. The outlook for 2025 remains exciting, particularly with regard to developments in government subsidies and new models such as Tesla's planned Model Q.
