Delay in the expansion of the Tesla-plant in Grünheide

The planned expansion of the Tesla-plant in Grünheide (Oder-Spree) has been postponed. The first part of the approval is now expected in the fall of 2024, according to a report by the "Tagesspiegel" newspaper.

Tesla remains optimistic

Tesla is sticking to its medium to long-term expansion plans for the factory. A company spokeswoman emphasized: "We are confident that, despite current delays, the next expansion steps can be initiated as soon as possible in coordination with the state government and the authorities."

The US electric car manufacturer's goal is to double production in its only European factory from the targeted 500,000 to one million vehicles per year. Although half a million vehicles have not yet been achieved, the company has applied for Tesla has applied to the state of Brandenburg for an environmental permit in several parts to enable the expansion. The State Environmental Agency has already given the preliminary green light for initial work, but emphasizes that high-quality documentation is necessary for a solid basis for testing.

New timetable for approval

Tesla-Plant manager André Thierig had originally hoped to receive approval for the first stage of the expansion between January and March of this year, but this was initially promised for February. Commissioning was planned for the first half of 2024. According to the "Tagesspiegel" Tesla and the responsible authorities have now agreed on a new timetable, with a decision on the first partial approval expected in the autumn.

The delay comes at a time of changed framework conditions. In April Tesla announced the reduction of 400 jobs in Grünheide, which is part of a global plan to cut jobs due to the slump in the market for electric cars.

First construction projects can begin

Regardless of the delays Tesla construction of individual projects can already begin. These include a logistics area for new cars, new stairwells and buildings for future office, break and sanitary areas. However, a new production hall is not yet included in the preliminary work and the first expansion stage.

Protests against expansion plans

Parallel to the expansion Tesla is planning an expansion that has sparked protests due to the need to clear forests. A freight station and logistics areas are to be built on a new site. Following a public consultation, the majority of whom were against the expansion, the plans were adjusted so that less forest had to be cleared.

Conclusion

Despite the delays Tesla remains optimistic and is working closely with the authorities to initiate the next steps in the expansion of the Grünheide factory. Expanding production capacity to one million vehicles per year remains the long-term goal, while the company seeks to minimize the environmental impact and address the concerns of the local community.
