What is bidirectional charging?
Bidirectional charging means that an electric vehicle can not only draw electricity from the grid, but also feed it back into the grid. The battery serves as a temporary energy store. This makes it possible:
- Energy supply for the homeSurplus electricity from the car battery can supply your home (V2H).
- Electricity supply to the gridThe vehicle can feed electricity into the public grid and thus contribute to grid stability (V2G).
- Supply of electrical devicesFrom hedge trimmers to laptops, devices can be powered directly from the car (V2L).
- Charging other electric vehiclesYour electric car can serve as a mobile charging station for other electric cars (V2V).
These technologies are collectively referred to as V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) summarized.
Current status at TeslaCan your vehicle charge bidirectionally?
So far the common Tesla-models Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y none bidirectional charging. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has been skeptical about this technology in the past and expressed doubts about customer interest. Bidirectional charging is therefore not yet implemented in current vehicles.
Looking ahead: the Tesla Cybertruck as a pioneer
With the introduction of the Tesla Cybertruck however, there are signs of change. The Cybertruck will support bidirectional charging and has an enormous battery capacity of 123 kWh. The following functions are planned:
- V2L (Vehicle-to-Load): Supply electrical devices with up to 9.6 kW power.
- V2H (Vehicle-to-Home): Supply your own home with up to 11.5 kW output.
- V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle)Possibility to charge other electric cars.
This makes the Cybertruck not only a vehicle, but also a flexible energy storage system and a mobile charging station.
Necessary hardware and costs
Additional hardware is required to be able to use the bidirectional functions of the Cybertruck:
- Universal Wall ConnectorA special wallbox that enables the flow of electricity in both directions.
- Powerwall GatewayEnables integration into the domestic energy system.
These components are associated with additional costs. However, customers who already have a Tesla Powerwall and a Wall Connector can use bidirectional charging without further investment.
Advantages of bidirectional charging
- Energy independenceIn combination with a solar system, your electric car can contribute to a self-sufficient energy supply.
- Cost savingsUse cheaper night-time electricity and feed electricity back into the grid when needed.
- SustainabilityReduce your carbon footprint through efficient energy use.
- Emergency power supply: Your vehicle can serve as a backup in the event of power outages.
