With the launch of the new third Mobile Connector, introduced alongside the Cybertruck of the Foundation-Series, Tesla shows initial indications of extended Powershare capabilities – and not exclusively for the Cybertruck.
New Gen 3 Mobile Connector: More than just an update
The new Mobile Connector, now available in the Tesla shop, appears almost like a mini Wall Connector, complete with a continuous green LED strip. Despite a slight price increase from 275 USD to 300 USD, the content and packaging remain largely unchanged – except for an interesting addition: Tesla signals that the connector can be used in combination with a not yet available "Powershare Outlet Adapter" to operate electronic devices directly via the connector.
Details about the Outlet Adapter are still sparse. However, it is expected that this adapter will have a special plug that is attached to the top of the Mobile Connector – similar to the 110V and 220V plugs. While the adapter is not yet available, everything indicates that it will be available in the Tesla shop in the coming months.
Powershare: Future expansion to other models?
So far, Powershare is exclusively available with the Cybertruck. There, Tesla uses the AC charging port to draw power from 120V and 240V outlets in the charging area. A crucial difference exists compared to the Powershare-capable Wall Connector, which is even capable of powering an entire house. The Mobile Connector, on the other hand, is geared towards powering individual devices.
Tesla makes it clear on the new product page that Powershare could potentially be used in other models in the future – whether in the new Model Y or even in older vehicles. Once this technology is integrated into existing models, owners can expect a power output of around 10 kW – enough to operate power tools, charge devices, or power common 110V applications such as refrigerators. The ability to use the vehicle battery as a portable power source thus represents a real added value for Tesla owners who want to be more independent from traditional AC charging.
Differences between Mobile Connector and Wall Connector
It is important to understand the difference between the Powershare-capable Wall Connector and the new Mobile Connector. While the Wall Connector – primarily in the Cybertruck – is capable of powering an entire house, the Mobile Connector is designed for the operation of individual devices. If Tesla extends Powershare to other vehicles, it remains to be seen whether this will also include the functionality of a home backup supply via a Tesla Gateway or if it will be realized in a more limited variant via the Mobile Connector and the Powershare Outlet Adapter.
Conclusion
With the introduction of the new Gen 3 Mobile Connectors, Tesla is once again setting innovative impulses – and hints that the powershare function could soon be featured in more models beyond the Cybertruck. For Tesla owners who want to use their vehicles as a mobile power source, this offers enormous potential. Whether through direct integration into current models or through retrofitted adapters, the ability to use a vehicle battery similar to a portable generator is a real upgrade for everyday life.
