US government pauses national EV charging infrastructure program
The Trump administration has paused the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program temporarily halted. The NEVI program was launched in 2021 in order to expand the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles with government funding.
🔌 What does this mean?
- No new subsidies are currently being awarded.
- Projects already in progress can continue to be financed for the time being.
- The US government is planning a reorientation of the program with new priorities.
According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) new guidelines are to be presented by the spring, after which a public consultation phase will begin.
NEVI program: 5 billion dollars for charging infrastructure
🚗 NEVI was financed with 5 billion dollarsto charge throughout the USA charging points for electric vehicles especially in regions that were previously underserved.
📊 Current status of the NEVI program:
✅ 56 charging stations are already active
✅ 900 more have been approved but are still in the planning phase
🚧 The stop could now delay many of these projects
Tesla, Rivian, ChargePoint and Electrify America were among the biggest beneficiaries of the program. Canadian companies such as FLO and Irving Oil were also involved.
How is Tesla affected?
Tesla has so far received over 31 million US dollars from the NEVI program.

Since Tesla investing massively in the expansion of its Superchargersthe stop of the program could slow down the expansion in the medium term - however Tesla far less dependent on state subsidies than other providers.
