Tesla has initiated a recall for a small number of Model S and Model X vehicles in the USA due to potential issues with the horn. The cause is a service error during the replacement of the driver's side airbag assembly, where an incorrect horn insert was inadvertently installed.
What is the issue?
In the affected vehicles – 2021 to 2024 Model S and 2021 to 2025 Model X, manufactured between May 13, 2021, and December 11, 2024 – there was a misassembly. Specifically, a mechanical horn insert was installed in a vehicle with a non-mechanical steering wheel, or vice versa. Although the airbag system remains unaffected, the horn may not function in an emergency. This impairs the driver's ability to warn other road users, thus increasing the risk of an accident.
How is the recall conducted?
Tesla identified the issue on December 10, 2024, during a review of service and spare part data. A detailed investigation revealed 91 cases of incorrectly configured horn inserts and steering wheels. So far, four warranty claims related to this defect have been registered, but no accidents or injuries have been reported. Tesla will inspect the airbag assembly in the affected vehicles and replace the horn insert free of charge if a misassembly is detected.
Regionally different measures
While this recall is currently only being conducted in the USA, Transport Canada has not yet announced any similar measures. Tesla continues to rely on fast and cost-free solutions to ensure road safety.
Conclusion
Even though it concerns a relatively small number of 91 vehicles, the recall highlights the importance of precise service processes and quality controls. Tesla is responding promptly to minimize potential safety risks and strengthen customer trust. If you own an affected vehicle, you will be contacted shortly by Tesla and asked to undergo a free inspection.
