Tesla Model Y: Best-selling car in the UK in 2024

Tesla continues to dominate the automotive market in the UK. In December 2024, the Tesla Model Y best-selling car - and not just among electric vehicles, but across all vehicle types. The Model 3 secured second place. These figures underline Tesla's leading role in the field of electromobility and the growing interest of British consumers in sustainable mobility.

Record figures for Tesla
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) could Tesla in December 2024 a total of 5,165 units of the Model Y which made it the best-selling vehicle in the UK. It was followed directly behind by the Model 3 with 3,477 units sold. Over the year as a whole, the Model Y impressive 32,862 salesmaking it the best-selling electric vehicle in 2024.

By way of comparison, the second-placed EV, the Audi Q4 e-tron, achieved in the same period 17,622 sales - less than half the sales figures of the Model Y.

The growing EV market in the UK
Tesla's success reflects the growing market share of electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK. In 2024, the share of EVs rose to a record high of 19,6 %. According to the SMMT, a wider variety of models, better ranges and more affordable prices contributed to this growth.

However, Mike Hawes, CEO of the SMMT, emphasized that the UK government's ambitious targets will be difficult to achieve without further support. The target for 2024 was an EV market share of 22 %which was narrowly missed. To reach the target of 28 % in 2025, the market would have to grow by almost 50 % growth.

The challenges of growth
Although the success of Tesla and other EV manufacturers is impressive, challenges remain. Analysts warn that without additional government incentives, such as subsidies or the expansion of charging infrastructure, the ambitious targets will be difficult to achieve. Nevertheless, the growing market share shows that consumers are increasingly opting for electric vehicles - a trend that is being significantly driven by Tesla's top models.

Conclusion
With the Model Y as the best-selling car in Great Britain and the Model 3 in second place Tesla further consolidated its leading position in the EV market. While the market for electric vehicles continues to grow, it is clear that Tesla plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable mobility. It remains to be seen whether the UK can achieve its 2025 targets - but one thing is certain: Tesla will remain an important player in the future.
