Turkey: Tesla Model Y Captures 4th place in registrations & #1 in EVs

The Tesla Model Y continues its success story in Turkey, reaching a remarkable fourth place among the country's best-selling cars in September. As the best-selling electric vehicle, it even outperforms local competitors and consolidates Tesla's position in the Turkish market.

Decline in the car market and Tesla's rise

In September 2024, car sales in Turkey fell by 11.82% to 69,634 units compared to the same month last year. While the overall market weakened, the light commercial vehicle market rose by 1.6% to 18,106 units. Overall, the market for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles fell by 0.9% to 849,892 units in the period from January to September 2024.

Dominance of petrol vehicles and growth of electric cars

Petrol vehicles continue to lead the market with a 63.6% share. Hybrid vehicles follow with 110,225 units sold and a share of 16.4%. However, electric vehicles are gaining in importance: 58,638 battery electric cars have been sold to date.

Tesla Model Y Overtaking the competition

In September Tesla a significant success. The Model Y became the fourth best-selling car in Turkey, competing with established brands and local manufacturers. With 2,475 units sold Tesla behind only the Renault Clio HB (4,026 units), the Fiat Egea Sedan (3,066 units) and the Renault Megane Sedan (2,646 units). Fifth place went to the Nissan Qashqai with 2,231 units.

Leading the electric vehicle market

The Turkish electric vehicle market reached a turning point in September. According to the Association of Automotive and Mobility Importers (ODMD), the Tesla with its Model Y the market and overtook its domestic competitor TOGG. Of the total of 9,548 electric vehicles sold, 25.9 percent were attributable to the Tesla Model Y. The TOGG T10X took second place with 2,200 units sold. The MINI Countryman (551 units), the BMW iX1 (513 units) and the Mercedes-Benz EQB (463 units) followed in second place.

Annual balance sheet: TOGG remains in front

Although Tesla took the lead in September, TOGG remains TOGG remains the market leader in the electric segment for the year as a whole. In the first nine months, the Turkish manufacturer sold 17,049 units, while Tesla 7,027 vehicles were sold.

Growing interest in electric vehicles

Interest in electric cars is growing steadily in Turkey. Thanks to brands such as TOGG and Tesla technological innovations and attractive tax benefits, more and more buyers are opting for an electric vehicle. The reduced special consumption tax (ÖTV) makes electric cars more financially attractive compared to combustion engines.

Outlook

The Tesla Model Y impressively demonstrates how electric vehicles can be successful in markets with strong local competition. With innovative technology and competitive prices Tesla makes a significant contribution to the promotion of electromobility in Turkey. The coming months will show how the competition between Tesla and TOGG will develop and what impact this will have on the Turkish automotive market.
