Tesla reaches a new milestone in its global energy strategy: The first Megapacks from the new Megafactory in Shanghai have been successfully shipped to Australia.
This marks the first time Tesla has started the export of energy storage systems outside the USA – a crucial step towards global supply of sustainable energy.
The starting signal for Tesla's global energy storage
On the platform X (formerly Twitter), Tesla announced the successful shipment of the first delivery, without specifying the exact destination in Australia. The company had already confirmed that Australia would be the first international market for the Megapacks "Made in China".
The Megafactory Shanghai: Gigantic in capacity and speed
The new Shanghai Megafactory is located directly adjacent to the well-known Gigafactory for electric cars in the Lingang district (Pudong). Construction of the facility only began in May 2024 – and production started as early as February 2025. An impressive speed even by Tesla standards.
The key figures of the new energy storage factory:
- Production capacity: up to 10,000 Megapacks per year
- Storage capacity: around 40 gigawatt-hours annually
- Comparable to Tesla's Megafactory in Lathrop, California
This doubles Tesla's global production capacity for large-scale storage – and significantly advances the global energy transition.
What is a Megapack – and what is it used for?
A Tesla Megapack stores approximately 3,900 kWh of electricity and is used where traditional batteries have long reached their limits – for example in:
- power grids
- solar or wind farms
- industrial large-scale plants
The advantages:
- Stabilization of the power grid
- Interim storage of excess solar or wind energy
- Avoiding power outages during peak loads
Especially in a sunny country like Australia, which heavily relies on renewable energy, megapacks are a central component for a stable, future-proof energy system.
Conclusion: China will be a key region for Tesla's large energy projects
With the export of the first Chinese megapacks to Australia, Tesla once again demonstrates how globally the company thinks and acts. The new Megafactory in Shanghai is not only a strategic location in Asia but also a symbol of Tesla's ambition to revolutionize energy supply worldwide.
For the European market, this is for now merely an observation – but the direction is clear: Tesla is expanding its energy division to become the second main pillar alongside electromobility.
