Tesla FSD V12.6: End-to-end highway and new features for HW3

Tesla has made it: On December 30, 2024, the long-awaited FSD V12.6 was released, just in time for the end of the year. This version brings exciting new features such as End-to-end highway stackimproved city driving behavior and features from FSD V13 on Hardware 3 vehicles. An update that will update older Tesla-models to the latest version.

End-to-end highway: a big step forward

Probably the biggest innovation is the end-to-end highway stackwhich was previously only available for HW4. This function noticeably improves the vehicle's behavior on freeways. Drivers of Model S and Model X can look forward to more precise decisions when changing lanes and an overall smoother ride.

Improvements for city driving

Tesla has worked on some of the weak points of the previous system, in particular the incorrect braking at green traffic lights. These optimizations should make driving in the city much more pleasant and reduce malfunctions.

New speed profiles

The updated speed profiles now offer more flexibility and dynamics:

  • Chill: Slow driving in the right-hand lane, minimal lane changes and compliance with the speed limit.
  • Standard: Adapts to the flow of traffic and changes lanes to maintain an appropriate speed.
  • Hurry: More aggressive driving with more frequent lane changes to make faster progress.

Earlier and more natural lane change decisions

A major problem with the previous versions was the timely lane selection before exits or turns. With FSD V12.6 Tesla has addressed this issue and improved performance. Drivers should experience a noticeable improvement in navigation.

Redesign of the controller from FSD V13

An exciting highlight: the redesigned controller from FSD V13 has been ported back for HW3. It ensures more precise tracking of the vehicle and surrounding objects, resulting in smoother and safer driving behavior.

Max Speed Update: More control over speed

With FSD V12.6 the auto speed mode is replaced by the Max Speed Offset replaced. This gives riders more control over the speed:

  • The minimum and maximum offset is 40%.
  • Drivers can use the speed profiles to determine how aggressively or defensively the vehicle drives.

Availability: When will the update be available?

The update 2024.45.25.10 will be rolled out gradually. It is currently only available for some Model S and Model X with HW3 available. According to Tesla-developer Ashok Elluswamy will announce availability for Model 3 and Model Y is expected in about a week. Owners of these models will therefore have to be patient.

Conclusion: An important step for older Tesla-models

With FSD V12.6 shows Tesla, that it continues to support and upgrade older hardware. The introduction of end-to-end highway, improved lane changes and new speed profiles makes autonomous driving on HW3 vehicles more powerful and comfortable. It remains to be seen how the update will be received by the Tesla-community, but initial impressions are promising.
