Tesla breaks delivery record - but expectations still unfulfilled?

Tesla delivers 495,570 vehicles in the fourth quarter - but still below expectations

Tesla recently published its production and delivery figures for the fourth quarter and the full year 2024. With 495,570 vehicles delivered in the fourth quarter, the Tesla set a new record, but fell well short of its own forecasts and analysts' expectations. They had expected around 507,000 deliveries in the fourth quarter.

Compared to 2023, when Tesla still achieved impressive growth of 38%, the company had to accept a slight decline in total deliveries of 1% in 2024.

Production and deliveries - a look at the figures

In the fourth quarter Tesla a total of 459,445 vehicles, including 436,718 units of the models Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. Deliveries of these models amounted to 471,930 units. The remaining models, such as the Tesla Model S and Model X, reached 23,640 deliveries with a production of 22,727 vehicles.

The figures for 2024 as a whole are as follows

  • Models 3/Y1,704,093 deliveries with 1,679,338 units produced
  • Other models85,133 deliveries with 94,105 units produced
  • Total1,789,226 vehicles delivered

Despite high production capacities and the introduction of new models such as the Cybertruck Tesla the growth of previous years.

Record discounts and incentives - Tesla fights for customers

In order to increase sales figures, the Tesla on extensive discounts and incentives. Customers benefited in the fourth quarter from free supercharging, discounts on the vehicles and even free use of the Full Self-Driving-package free of charge. However, these measures do not appear to have been enough to achieve the targets that the company set itself.

A ray of hope for energy storage solutions

One area that continues to develop positively is Tesla's energy storage business. In the fourth quarter, the company sold 11 GWh of energy storage solutions - a new record. Products such as the Tesla Megapack and Powerwall show great potential for growth, even independently of the vehicle business.

Outlook - What does this mean for the future?

The results make it clear that Tesla is facing challenges. While the company continues to drive forward innovations such as the Cybertruck, competition in the EV market is getting tougher. In particular, growing competition from other electric car manufacturers and the general leveling off of growth could Tesla force it to adapt its strategy.

A possible focus on more affordable models could be a key to strengthening its market position. At the same time, progress in the area of energy products could provide a stable second pillar in the business.
