Vehicle registration figures 05/2024: Tesla with significant decline compared to the same month last year

A total of 236,425 new passenger cars were registered in May 2024, which corresponds to a decrease of -4.3% compared to the same month last year. The number of new commercial registrations decreased by -5.6%, while private registrations fell by -1.3%.

Among the German brands, new passenger car registrations at VW rose by +8.7%, giving VW a market share of 20.1%. Among the import brands, Peugeot recorded the strongest increase in registrations with +70.9 percent and a share of 2.5 percent. Skoda proved to be the import brand with the highest share at 7.4 percent.

Despite a decline of -5.5 percent, the SUV segment was the strongest segment with a share of 29.3 percent. The compact class recorded the strongest growth at +29.1% and achieved a 20.4% share of new registrations. There were declines in the mini (-38.6%), luxury (-30.7%), mid-size (-25.7%), sports car (-22.1%) and MPV (-20.7%) segments.

Electric cars in May 2024

In May 2024, 29,708 electric passenger cars (BEV) were newly registered, which corresponds to a decrease of -30.6% compared to the same month last year. Electric vehicles accounted for 12.6% of all new registrations. Hybrid drives were represented in 71,451 new cars, accounting for a share of 30.2 percent. These included 14,038 plug-in hybrids, which recorded a slight increase of +1.7 percent.

Market shares and changes in electric car brands

Tesla continued to maintain its position as the leading pure electric car brand with 1,896 new registrations, despite a decline of -64.0% compared to the same period last year. From January to May 2024, a total of 16,601 Tesla-vehicles were newly registered from January to May 2024, a decrease of -41.4% compared to the same period last year.

  • BYD: 201 new registrations in May 2024, +272.2% compared to May 2023, a total of 777 new registrations from January to May 2024, +370.9% compared to the same period last year.
  • Fisker: 12 new registrations in May 2024, no comparative data for May 2023, 122 new registrations in total from January to May 2024, no comparative data for the same period last year.
  • Lucid: 13 new registrations in May 2024, +1,200.0% compared to May 2023, a total of 50 new registrations from January to May 2024, +614.3% compared to the same period last year.
  • Polestar: 414 new registrations in May 2024, -34.2% compared to May 2023, a total of 1,251 new registrations from January to May 2024, -43.3% compared to the same period last year.

In May 2024, a total of 628,800 motor vehicles (motor vehicles) changed hands, which corresponds to an increase of +3.9%.
