The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has registration figures for electric cars in Germany for the year 2023 published. A total of 524,219 electric cars were newly registered, which corresponds to an increase of almost 54,000 vehicles compared to the previous year. Despite this significant growth, the share of electric cars in the overall market stagnated, rising only slightly from 17.7 to 18.3 percent.
Of particular note is the Tesla Model Ywhich is the best-selling electric car in Germany in 2023. With just under 46,000 models sold, it recorded an increase of around 10,000 vehicles compared to the previous year. Other top models were the VW ID.4 and ID.5 in second place with 36,353 units, followed by the Skoda Enyaq in third place with 23,498 units. The Fiat 500 Electric took fourth place with 22,608 new registrations, followed by the VW ID.3 in fifth place with 22,270 vehicles.
Among the manufacturers themselves, the situation is somewhat different for some manufacturers due to the greater variety of models. Here, Volkswagen AG secured first place with around 71,000 vehicles, surpassing the electric car pioneer Tesla, which sold around 64,000 vehicles. BMW and Mercedes followed in third and fourth place with around 40,000 and 37,000 electric cars sold respectively.
The impressive registration figures for electric cars in 2023 compare to the previous year 2022, which saw significant growth of 32.2 percent in pure electric vehicles. In the final year of 2023, growth is therefore much more moderate at 11.4%. This development is also reflected in the increase in the share of electric vehicles in the overall market, which only rose by 0.7 percentage points compared to the previous year, indicating a steady, albeit no longer exponential, spread of electromobility. The dynamism of the market and the competition between manufacturers also promise exciting developments in the electric vehicle sector in the coming years
Despite the moderate growth, an important milestone was reached: for the first time, more electric cars were registered than diesel cars. This shift in the new registration statistics shows the ongoing change in the automotive industry and illustrates the increasing influence of electromobility on the German vehicle market.
