Owners of the Tesla Cybertruck in cold regions, especially in Canada, are currently struggling with slow charging speeds and limited recuperation. The problems appear to be due to a software problem that Tesla will be resolved with an upcoming update.
Charging problems at low temperatures
The Cybertruckwhich is equipped with the innovative 4680 battery cells is particularly sensitive to temperature changes. In cold temperatures, the battery loses its ability to charge quickly or to retrieve energy efficiently. Although Tesla normally warms up the battery while driving or in advance, a software problem is apparently preventing the battery pack from heating up correctly.
What is particularly annoying is that Cybertruck owners cannot use recuperation even at temperatures as low as -5 °C (41 °F). For comparison: Other Tesla-models allow recuperation as soon as the battery has warmed up through use.
Software update confirmed
A Cybertruck owner has Tesla about the problem, whereupon the service confirmed that it is a known software problem. The problem should be solved with the upcoming software update 2025.2 which is expected to be released in the second or third week of 2025.
Tesla has clarified that this is not a physical problem with the heating technology. Instead, a over-the-air (OTA) update will be sufficient to restore functionality. The company has emphasized that no repairs are necessary.
Temporary solution: How to fix the problem yourself
Until the update is available, there is a temporary solution:
- Set the navigation to a nearby Supercharger.
- The vehicle automatically starts to condition the battery.
- After about 5-10 minutes, you can cancel the navigation, as the battery is then sufficiently warmed up to charge at full power.
This method also solves the problem with the limited recuperationas the battery becomes more powerful through preheating.
Conclusion: Tesla reacts quickly
The upcoming update shows once again how flexible Tesla reacts to problems. Thanks to OTA technology, problems can be resolved without the need for a visit to the service center. Owners of the Cybertruck can therefore rest assured: the Cybertruck will soon offer the usual high performance and user-friendliness - even in freezing temperatures.
