Tesla improves the loading speed of the Model Y Standard Range in cold weather

Tesla has developed a groundbreaking solution to improve the charging speed of the Standard Range models of the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 with LiFePO4 batteries (LFP) in cold weather. Thanks to a new battery heating option on the V3 and V4 Superchargers, these models can now charge up to four times faster in winter than before.

Challenge: Charging behavior of LFP batteries in cold weather

LiFePO4 batteries are known for their robustness and longevity, but have difficulties at low temperatures. As a result, the charging speed decreases significantly in cold weather compared to NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) batteries. This was particularly noticeable in the RWD variants of the Model Y and Model 3 which are equipped with LFP batteries.

Tesla The company has so far relied on a preheating routine in which the battery is slowly brought to the optimum temperature before charging at the Supercharger. However, this method only improved the charging speed to a limited extent.

Solution: Ripple AC technology for battery heating

The new Supercharger battery heater works with alternating current pulses (ripple AC)which are passed directly through the battery cells. This heats the battery faster and more efficiently, which significantly reduces charging times at low temperatures.

According to Max de Zegher from Tesla this innovation is a result of vertical integration and exclusively for vehicles with LFP batteries from CATL batteries. It enables a Model Y Standard Range to get back on the road quickly, even in extreme weather conditions.

Advantages of the new technology

  • Up to four times faster charging in winter
  • More efficient use of the Supercharger
  • Reduction of waiting time in cold weather

LFP batteries: Advantages and disadvantages

Despite their limitations in cold weather LiFePO4 batteries offer some advantages, including a longer service life and lower production costs. However, Elon Musk has pointed out the challenges that LFP batteries present in extreme temperatures. While the new technology significantly improves charging speed, range in cold conditions remains a point of concern. Tesla continues to work on.

Tesla CATL is currently testing new LFP cells from CATL that should offer a constant charging speed even at low temperatures. These batteries could be used in future models.

Conclusion: faster charging in winter

With the new Supercharger battery heater Tesla another milestone in e-mobility. The improvement in charging times in winter makes the Model Y standard range even more attractive for drivers in colder regions. It remains exciting to see what other innovations Tesla will be presented in the coming years.
