A towbar is an extremely practical feature for many drivers. Whether for a family vacation with the caravan, a weekend trip with the bike rack or spontaneous furniture transport - with a towbar you are equipped for all eventualities.
Tesla and the trailer coupling: an overview
Tesla has long neglected the subject of towbars. Initially, none of the models were equipped with a trailer coupling as standard. The concern that trailers could have a negative impact on aerodynamic efficiency and therefore range was probably too great. In addition Tesla as a pioneer for stylish and innovative electric vehicles, for which a trailer coupling did not necessarily fit into the picture.
In the meantime Tesla has rethought things. Almost all models are now available with at least an optional towbar. Nevertheless, there are differences between the models and challenges when retrofitting.
Tesla Model X
The Model X was the first Tesla-model that could be equipped with a trailer coupling. Until 2018, however, this had to be booked as an optional extra for a fee. Since then, the trailer coupling has been included as standard. With a maximum towing capacity of up to 2,300 kg and a drawbar load of up to 100 kg, the Model X is ideally suited for larger trailers.
Tesla Model S
The situation is different for the Model S. No trailer coupling was offered until 2020. Only with the facelift and the introduction of the Plaid variant is it possible to use a trailer coupling. However, this must be ordered separately in the Tesla-store for €790. The maximum towing capacity here is 1,600 kg, the drawbar load 100 kg.
Tesla Model Y
The Model Y is now a popular family vehicle and is ideal for adventures with a trailer. Originally, the trailer coupling had to be purchased separately, but since mid-2022 it can be selected directly in the configurator. The cost is currently €1,350. The Model Y offers a maximum towing capacity of 1,600 kg (braked) and 750 kg (unbraked) as well as a drawbar load of 72 kg. Thanks to the trailer mode, the vehicle adapts its driving characteristics perfectly to towing a trailer.
Tesla Model 3
With the Model 3 the situation is somewhat more complicated. Before May 2019, there was no option for a trailer coupling. Since then, it can be booked as an option for the Standard Range and Long Range variants. However, the Performance variant remains excluded; here Tesla does not offer a trailer coupling. The maximum towing capacity is 1,000 kg and the drawbar load is 100 kg.
Retrofitting a Tesla trailer coupling
For many Teslaowners whose vehicles do not have a factory-installed towbar, the only option is to retrofit a third-party supplier. Tesla does not offer retrofitting itself. Reputable providers such as Coupling-on-site, MisterDotCom and kupplung.de have specialized in the retrofitting of Tesla-models. The costs vary between €1,000 and €2,000 depending on the model and provider, plus installation costs and fees for TÜV approval.
It is important that attention is paid to quality and safety when retrofitting. Improper installation can not only be dangerous, but can also invalidate the warranty.
Towing capacity, drawbar load and prices at a glance
The maximum trailer load and drawbar load vary depending on the Tesla-model:
- Model XTowing capacity up to 2,300 kg, drawbar load up to 100 kg.
- Model S: Towing capacity 1,600 kg, drawbar load 100 kg.
- Model YTowing capacity 1,600 kg (braked), 750 kg (unbraked), vertical load 72 kg.
- Model 3Towing capacity 1,000 kg, drawbar load 100 kg.
The prices for the towbars range from €790 (Model S, sold separately in the Tesla-store) and €1,350 (Model 3 and Model Y, directly when purchasing the vehicle).
Range and trailer operation
When towing a trailer, the range of an electric vehicle is significantly reduced. Factors such as speed, wind, terrain and the weight of the trailer play a major role. A range loss of around 25-30% is to be expected. It is therefore advisable to plan for longer charging times and take into account the charging infrastructure along the route.
Another point is charging at Superchargers. As most charging stations are not designed for vehicles with trailers, the trailer may have to be disconnected. Tesla However, the company is working on setting up new charging parks with drive-through facilities.
Which Tesla is best suited for trailer driving?
For frequent long-distance journeys with a trailer, we recommend the Model Y Long Range due to its larger battery capacity and greater range. The Model X is also a good choice thanks to its high towing capacity and standard trailer coupling.
Conclusion
The integration of the trailer coupling into the Tesla-models shows that the company is responding to the needs of its customers. Whether retrofitted or ex works - there is now a trailer coupling for almost every Tesla suitable solution. It is important to inform yourself well in advance, to know your own requirements and, if necessary, to choose professional providers for retrofitting. That way, nothing will stand in the way of your next family adventure with a trailer!
