A recent study by management consultancy Gartner shows that Tesla, Rivian and Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers continue to have a clear lead over traditional manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover and Toyota in the digital transformation of the automotive industry. The study highlights the major challenges that established car manufacturers face in keeping pace with the innovative technologies of their younger competitors.
Tesla remains at the top
In the year 2024 Tesla continues to lead the Gartner index, but is down 4% on the previous year. According to Gartner analyst Pedro Pacheco Tesla weaknesses in connectivity, particularly due to the lack of 5G support and the fact that satellite connectivity has not yet been implemented. In addition, the user rating of the Tesla-app has deteriorated. Changes in the management team have also led to a loss of points, which raises questions about the stability of the company's management. Despite these challenges Tesla a pioneer, particularly through revenue from over-the-air software updates.
Chinese manufacturers are catching up
According to the study, Chinese manufacturers such as Nio, Xpeng and Geely are making great progress. Nio increased its value in the index by 2%, while Rivian and Xpeng increased by as much as 13%. These companies are performing strongly and could Tesla soon become dangerous. "The average performance of Chinese car manufacturers is extremely good," says Pacheco.
Traditional manufacturers under pressure
The traditional car manufacturers, on the other hand, are weak in comparison. Jaguar Land Rover takes last place in the index, while Toyota is in third-last place with a drop of 7%. BMW is the best German manufacturer in 10th place, followed by Mercedes, Renault and VW. The analysts emphasize that it will be a major challenge for traditional manufacturers to transform themselves into technology companies.
