Tesla-Sales in China rise in June, despite weak exports

Tesla recorded an increase in sales in China in June 2024. The US carmaker delivered 59,261 electric vehicles to Chinese customers, an increase of 7.3% compared to the previous month. Compared to the previous year, however, this is a decrease of 20.2 percent.

According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), a total of 71,007 Tesla-vehicles were sold in China in June, of which 11,746 were destined for export. This represents a significant decline of 39.7% compared to the previous year and 32.3% compared to the previous month.

Production and export strategy

Tesla operates a production facility in Shanghai, where the sedan Model 3 and the crossover Model Y are manufactured. These vehicles are produced both for the local market and for export. Traditionally, more vehicles are produced for export in the first half of a quarter, while production for the local market increases in the second half.

In June, of the total number of vehicles sold and exported in China, 43,951 units were attributable to the Model Y. This corresponds to a decrease of 30.3 percent compared to the previous year and a slight decrease of 3.10 percent compared to the previous month.

Outlook

Despite the year-on-year decline, the increase in monthly sales shows that demand for Tesla-vehicles in China remains robust. The weaker exports could be due to seasonal fluctuations or strategic adjustments in production and export planning.

Tesla remains a major player in the Chinese electric vehicle market and will continue to serve both local and international customers with its innovative vehicles.
