Tesla Deactivates 12V sockets & USB ports when guard mode is active

Tesla has introduced an unexpected change with the latest software update 2024.32 that affects the way vehicles handle their power connections. From now on, the 12V sockets and USB ports will be deactivated during active Sentry Mode. This change affects all models except the Cybertruck, which already allows individual settings for the power supply.

What has changed?

Before the update, the 12V sockets and USB ports remained active as long as the car was "awake" or Sentry Mode was switched on. This allowed owners to operate devices such as vehicle fridges or laptops via these connections. With the 2024.32 update, however, these connections are now deactivated as soon as the vehicle switches to sleep mode.

Effects on accessories and devices

This change has a significant impact on the use of accessories that rely on a constant power supply:

  • Vehicle refrigeratorsOwners who operate a refrigerator in the trunk or underfloor compartment must now find alternative solutions.
  • Charging procedures for appliancesCharging laptops, tablets or other USB devices while parked is made more difficult.
  • AccessoriesOther devices that were operated via the 12V sockets no longer work during guard mode.

Possible solutions and alternatives

Until Tesla further changes are introduced, owners only have the option of using the camp mode to maintain the power supply. However, this mode has some disadvantages:

  • The vehicle remains unlockedwhich entails security risks.
  • Energy consumption is higher as other systems also remain active.

Future prospects: Integration of Cybertruck power management?

There is speculation that Tesla plans to integrate the "Outlets & Accessories"-menu of the Cybertruck to other models. This menu allows the sockets in the vehicle interior and in the loading area to be kept active even when the vehicle is not in use. The sockets remain active up to 12 hours after leaving the vehicle.

Improvements to the guard mode in prospect?

Drew Baglino, former Senior Vice President for Drives and Energy at Tesla, mentioned earlier this year that the company is working to reduce the energy consumption of guard mode by about 40%. Whether the current changes are part of this effort is still unclear. However, many owners hope that Tesla these functions optional so that they can decide for themselves when the sockets and USB ports should remain active.

Conclusion: A step back or a step forward?

Deactivating the 12 V sockets and USB ports during guard mode is not a good idea for many people. Tesla-owners and possibly impractical. While the energy savings are positive, many would like more flexibility and hope for future updates that allow for customization.
