Tesla continues its expansion in the energy storage solutions and has been selected for one of the largest projects in South America. The Chilean energy producer Colbún has Tesla commissioned, Megapacks for a 228-megawatt solar project in the Camarones district. The project underlines the growing importance of Tesla energy and the role of energy storage solutions in the global energy transition.
The solar project in Camarones: an overview
With a planned investment of 260 million dollars the solar plant in Camarones will have a capacity of 228 MW capacity. In combination with a daily energy storage system of 912 MWh the project will be able to store over 55,000 households with clean energy. Construction is expected to 200 jobs and is scheduled to go into operation in mid-2026.
Key facts about the project:
- Capacity228 MW of solar energy with 912 MWh of energy storage.
- Investment260 million USD.
- CommissioningPlanned for mid-2026.
- Effects: Supply more than 55,000 households with renewable energy.
Tesla's Megapacks: The solution for the energy transition
Tesla's Megapacks are state-of-the-art energy storage solutions specially developed for large projects. Each unit can be charged via 3.9 MWh of energy which is enough to store around 3,600 households with electricity for one hour. The megapacks are ideal for balancing out fluctuations in the electricity grid and storing surplus energy from solar or wind power plants.
This project in Chile is not Tesla's first major project in the region. The Gigafactory LathropTesla's production site for Megapacks, celebrated the completion of the 10,000th Megapack. These battery systems are used in major energy projects around the world, most recently in Australia, where they were part of two major projects worth USD 200 million.
Why Megapacks are a game changer for Chile
Chile is one of the leading countries in South America when it comes to the use of renewable energies. The use of Tesla Megapacks in the Camarones project offers numerous advantages:
- Increased grid stabilityMegapacks can compensate for power fluctuations and improve the reliability of the power grid.
- Efficient energy storageExcess solar energy can be stored and used when needed, e.g. at night or in bad weather.
- Cost reductionThe technology helps to reduce the cost of fossil fuels and cut energy costs in the long term.
With projects like this Tesla is strengthening its position as a leading provider of energy storage solutions and supporting countries such as Chile in their transition to renewable energies.
Tesla's global energy vision: a look into the future
In addition to the Camarones project Tesla is working on numerous other major projects worldwide. The goal is clear: the vision of Tesla, creating a sustainable energy future is becoming reality step by step. With every new installation of Megapacks Tesla contributes to accelerating the transition to clean energy.
