Tesla has announced the launch of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system in Europe in the first quarter of 2025 - subject to the necessary regulatory approvals. The company recently announced this on its AI account on Platform X. While Tesla-customers in the USA have been able to use the FSD option for some time, some functions of the autopilot system are still pending in Europe, as the necessary approvals are lacking in many countries.
Tesla-FSD: Challenges and progress in Europe
In Germany Tesla-drivers have been able to purchase the "full potential for autonomous driving" for 7500 euros for some time now. However, many of the functions that run under the FSD label in the USA have so far been restricted in Europe. Tesla The company even had to withdraw certain autonomy functions here in order to comply with the strict European approval requirements. While the system is considered an assistance system in the USA and therefore does not require special approval, more extensive regulations must be observed in Europe.
However, regulatory progress has recently been made at the level of the UN-ECE, an organization that also includes European countries. These advances concern the introduction of so-called DACS (Driver Assistance Continuum Systems), which take over more of the driving task than conventional driver assistance systems, but without bearing full responsibility. Tesla seems confident that these new developments could pave the way for FSD approval in Europe in early 2025.
FSD option soon in China too
Europe is not the only place on Tesla's FSD radar. The company also announced an FSD launch in China for the same quarter. Regulatory approvals are also required here, but CEO Elon Musk was able to make progress with the Chinese authorities during a visit in April. It will be interesting to see how the regulatory situation in both markets develops between now and the planned launch.

Progress on FSD software: version 12.5.2 and version 13
In addition to the planned market launches in Europe and China, there is also good news for the USA. Version 12.5.2 of the FSD software will be released in September 2024 and will be available for all electric vehicles with older Autopilot 3 hardware, including the new Cybertruck. Version 13 is then expected in October 2024, which will Tesla described as a revolutionary advance. This should be able to drive around six times further autonomously before a driver has to intervene.
FSD in Europe: a long road to success
The introduction of the Full Self-Driving system in Europe could be an important step for Tesla and its European customers. However, despite the announced launch date, it remains unclear when full regulatory approval will be granted. What is certain, however, is that Tesla has made great progress at both a technological and regulatory level to make the dream of autonomous driving a reality in Europe too.
With a launch in the first quarter of 2025 Tesla-drivers in this country could finally be able to enjoy the latest FSD features - provided that the European authorities give their approval in time.
