Tesla is taking a major step forward: the electric car manufacturer has received the first partial approval from the Brandenburg State Office for the Environment for the expansion of its Gigafactory in Grünheide. This approval enables Tesla, to expand an existing production hall and thus significantly increase production capacity.
Expansion without additional deforestation
An important aspect of the expansion is that no additional deforestation is required. The expansion will take place on the existing site of the Gigafactory, the only e-car factory of Elon Musk in Europe. This means that
- Protecting the environmentNo further encroachment on adjacent forest areas.
- Efficient useOptimization of the existing terrain.
Doubling of production capacity planned
With the first partial approval Tesla:
- Increase in vehicle productionfrom the current 500,000 to one million vehicles per year in the future.
- Increase in battery cell productionfrom the current 50 to 100 gigawatt hours per year.
This expansion will facilitate the production of models such as the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Model 3 models.
Further approvals in prospect
Tesla has already submitted the application for a modification permit to the State Environment Agency in March 2023, which is divided into several partial permits. The current permit allows:
- Extension of production buildings.
- Rescheduling of ancillary facilities such as waste facilities.
- Construction of infrastructureStorage areas, utility buildings and parking lots.
Further permits are required for the actual construction of new production facilities, which are already being processed.

The approval signals that a further expansion with the environmental impact described is generally approvable. This means that
