Tesla introduces bidirectional charging and functions such as V2G, V2H and V2X with the Cybertruck!

With the official launch of the new Tesla Cybertruck, Tesla is now also introducing a long-awaited feature, namely bidirectional charging. Although Tesla has only spoken vaguely about this technology in the past, or rather considered it unenforceable, it is now becoming a reality with the Cybertruck. The Powershare function presented today enables bidirectional charging and includes vehicle-to-charger, vehicle-to-house and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2L, V2H and V2V) functions.

The Cybertruck's V2L function enables devices to be supplied with power via five sockets, including two 120 V and 20 A sockets on the cargo bed and in the cab, as well as a 240 V and 40 A socket on the cargo bed. This opens up application possibilities for work equipment, camping and mobile emergency power supply. The Cybertruck specifications already showed bidirectional charging functions, whereby the continuous output of 9.6 kW now confirmed by Tesla is combined via five sockets in the vehicle. By comparison, the F-150 Lightning offers the same maximum power but more sockets.

The Cybertruck has a V2H system with an output power of 11.5 kW to supply a house with electricity in the event of a power failure or grid instability. Unlike the F-150 Lightning, the Cybertruck does not require expensive additional equipment if a Tesla Powerwall and the Tesla Wall Connector are already installed. With Powershare, a Cybertruck owner can power their home for more than three days if the average daily consumption is 30 kWh. This feature significantly expands the capacity of a Powerwall and helps make homes more resilient to power outages.

In the future, Powershare may also be available for other Tesla vehicles, although it is currently exclusive to the Cybertruck. The versatility of this feature, including the ability to use the Cybertruck's battery to charge other electric vehicles (V2V), suggests that bidirectional charging could play an increasingly important role in electric mobility and now at Tesla.
