Tesla is making progress - but Europe is lagging behind
While Tesla FSD "supervised" in the USA is making impressive progress and is already being used on public roads, Europe is lagging behind. Here is the FSD software, officially known as "Full potential for autonomous driving" is sold, at a level from 2019 and only offers limited functions.
But there is hope: according to a Tesla-roadmap should FSD supervised in Europe in the first quarter of 2025 if the authorities give the green light.
Why is FSD supervised not yet available in Europe?
Tesla FSD supervised is not yet fully available in Europe because the regulations for autonomous driving are stricter than in the USA. Especially the UN/ECE regulationswhich relate to driving dynamics and safety, set Tesla tight limits.
Here are the most important hurdles:
🔹 EU design regulations – Tesla must prove that the driver remains attentive at all times and has their hands on the steering wheel.
🔹 UN Regulation 79 - Defines strict limits for speeds, lane changes and cornering.
🔹 No approval for level 3 or higher – Tesla wants a system that works everywherenot just on highways under certain conditions like Mercedes.
What has changed in 2024?
📌 Regulation 79 is being revised - New drafts of the UN/ECE show that FSD supervised on highways could soon be possible in Europe.
📌 Camera surveillance is becoming stricter – Tesla has the interior camera for driver monitoring which could be a sign that approval is imminent.
📌 Amendments to the law in Switzerland - From March 2025 vehicles with level 3 and 4 may be tested in Switzerland.
When will Tesla FSD supervised to Europe?
According to the Tesla AI roadmap is FSD supervised planned for Europe in the first quarter of 2025 - but only if the approvals are granted.

- Initial tests with FSD supervised only on highways in the EU
- Strict monitoring by the Driver camera & safety mechanisms
- Still no "unsupervised" autonomous driving without driver monitoring
