Tesla tests ride-hailing service with FSD for employees in the Bay Area

Tesla surprises with a new pilot project: For almost a year now, the company has been operating a ride-hailing network for its employees in the Bay Area. The service relies on Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD)-software, but for safety reasons there is currently a driver in every vehicle who can intervene in an emergency.

Exclusive service for Tesla-employees

The network is currently available exclusively for employees in the Tesla-headquarters. They can use a special app to book rides and directly experience how Tesla's autonomous driving technology performs in practice. There were already indications of this app in the first quarter of 2024, but it was not clear that the service was already in use.

Tesla's path to fully autonomous mobility

Elon Musk confirmed in the quarterly report for Q3 2024 that the ride-hailing service with FSD is not just an experiment, but part of a larger goal: Tesla plans to launch a fully autonomous, driverless ride-hailing service in California and Texas by 2025. According to Musk Tesla, that the technology will be so mature by Q2 2025 that a driverless operation will be safer than a human driver.

The challenges of full autonomy

Although FSD software has made significant progress, full autonomy - driving without human intervention - remains a challenge. Development is progressing with the newly introduced FSD V12, which is based on an end-to-end neural network, but approval from state authorities is still awaited in California and Texas.

Conclusion: An ambitious project with great potential

Tesla's ride-hailing pilot project could be an important step towards autonomous mobility. The planned launch in 2025 will show whether Tesla can overcome the regulatory and technical hurdles to integrate autonomous vehicles into everyday traffic.
