Tesla-Drivers with Android smartphones can look forward to a practical feature: the ability to unlock their vehicle using NFC (Near-Field Communication). This feature, known as "Tap to Unlock", is enabled by default and provides an additional way to open your car without having to access your key or the Tesla-app without having to rely on your key.
Tap to Unlock: How it works
If your Android phone is NFC-enabled, you can simply tap your phone on the NFC card reader of your Tesla to unlock or lock the vehicle. The NFC sensor is located near the B-pillar and you should place your phone in the right place to establish the connection. If the connection is successful, the vehicle will beep twice and unlock.
Important to note: When using Tap to Unlock, your personal profile is not automatically loaded. The car will treat this as a unique key, which means you will need to manually select your profile after getting in to apply the preset settings for seats and mirrors.
Advantages of the function
A key benefit of this feature is the ability to unlock the car even when your phone's battery is low. Newer Android devices keep the NFC function active even when the battery is low. This is particularly useful if your Phone-as-a-Key (PAAK) is not working properly or your phone is not charged.
However, if your Bluetooth is disabled or your phone's battery is dead, you will need to authenticate yourself in the vehicle to start it. This can be done by placing your phone on the wireless charger or in the NFC compartment between the cup holders.
Alternative NFC devices
For the more adventurous among you Tesla-drivers, there is the option of using other NFC-enabled devices as key cards. Some users report success with NFC rings or smartwatches as backup solutions. These are ideal alternatives if your main device is lost.
