Tesla finally has its "Actually Smart Summon"-feature in Europe and the Middle East. However, its use is severely restricted by European regulations. What is "Actually Smart Summon"?
"Actually Smart Summon" is a further development of the existing Summon feature. It allows Tesla-vehicles to navigate autonomously to the driver, for example in a parking lot. The function uses advanced sensors and hardware (versions 3 and 4) to avoid obstacles and find a safe route.
Restrictions due to UNECE regulation R79
In Europe, the introduction of autonomous systems is restricted by the UNECE Regulation R79 limits the introduction of autonomous systems. This stipulates strict requirements for autonomous features:
- Maximum distance to the vehicle: The user must be within 6 meters (19.5 feet) from the vehicle.
- Maximum driving distance: The function may only be used up to 100 meters (328 feet). Tesla has, however, reduced this distance to 15-20 meters (50-65 feet).
These restrictions make the feature less useful in practice, as the driver has to walk almost alongside the vehicle.
Tesla's commitment to relaxed regulations
Tesla is working hard to update the UNECE regulations. Earlier this year, the company held demonstrations for European politicians to show the benefits of advanced autonomy features.
While FSD Supervised is already making progress in Europe, the way remains open for functions such as "Actually Smart Summon" or future features such as Robotaxis or Robovans longer. The regulatory hurdles mainly concern requirements for driver interaction and safety protocols.
