Tesla's new megafactory in Shanghai is already 60% complete after just four months of construction. This puts the project on schedule to start production of the Megapack, Tesla's utility-scale energy storage solution, in early 2025.
Strategic location and importance of the megafactory
The Megafactory is located in the Lingang New Area in Shanghai, very close to Tesla's existing Gigafactory. This new plant is the first of its kind outside North America. The other Megafactory from Tesla is located in Lathrop, California. With the expansion in China Tesla its presence in the global market for energy storage solutions.
Once production capacity is fully ramped up, the megafactory in Shanghai will reach a production capacity of 40 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year, which corresponds to the production output of the Californian plant. This means that around 10,000 megapacks will be produced in China and another 10,000 in California every year.
Growing demand for megapacks
Tesla is seeing a sharp rise in demand for its energy storage solutions, particularly the Megapack. These large battery systems are ideal for use in utilities and large energy projects as they can store excess electricity and release it when needed.
