Tesla in Germany? Europe's first lithium refinery starts up

The demand for lithium is rising steadily as electric cars and energy storage solutions are becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Now there is a new beacon of hope in Europe: the first lithium hydroxide refinery on European soil has started operations at the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park in Germany. This could soon help to increase battery production for Tesla and other electric car manufacturers in Europe.

Lithium hydroxide - the fuel for electric car batteries

Lithium hydroxide is an essential raw material for the production of lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. The refinery operated by AMG Lithium will initially produce 20,000 tons of this material annually, which is enough to supply around 500,000 electric car batteries. This production volume is set to increase even further in the coming years.

"We are now starting the ramp-up phase and are ramping up the plant step by step," says Stefan Scherer, Managing Director of AMG Lithium. The first lithium hydroxide will be available in the coming weeks, which will then enter the qualification process as a supplier. Full production is then to be expanded to up to 100,000 tons per year in order to meet the growing demand from the automotive industry.

Europe becomes more independent - lithium from Brazil

A major advantage for AMG Lithium is that the company operates its own mine in Brazil, which supplies four-fifths of the lithium required. This significantly reduces AMG Lithium's dependence on other international suppliers. The lithium is currently still being processed into lithium hydroxide in China, but AMG plans to further shorten this value chain by building its own processing plant in Brazil.

Future market for lithium in Europe

AMG Lithium expects Europe to require up to 500,000 tons of lithium hydroxide annually by 2030. The construction of its own refinery in Germany is therefore not only an important step towards independence from Asia, but also an opportunity to meet the demand for sustainable battery production in Europe. With the increasing demand for electric vehicles and energy storage solutions, the European battery market will experience an enormous growth spurt in the coming years.

An outlook on alternative technologies

Although lithium-ion batteries currently dominate the market, alternatives such as sodium-ion batteries are also increasingly being researched. Sodium is available in almost unlimited supply and could play a complementary role in the future. Nevertheless, lithium-ion batteries currently offer the best performance for electric cars and energy storage solutions.

Conclusion

The opening of Europe's first lithium hydroxide refinery lays the foundation for increased battery production in Europe. This development could also be Tesla Germany, as the demand for lithium-ion batteries continues to grow. It will be interesting to see how the European battery market develops in the coming years and what role AMG Lithium will play in this.
