Elon Musk sees the Tesla Semi as a global vehicle. The focus is particularly on Europe, where production of the Semi is expected to take place. But what does this mean for the market and the competition?
Tesla Semi: a global approach
Elon Musk has emphasized several times that the Tesla Semi is not only intended for the North American market. In 2024, he presented Tesla the Semi at two important events in Germany, including the IAA Transportation in Hanover and in front of the factory in Berlin. These steps underline Tesla's intention to establish the Semi as a globally available product.
Production planned in Europe
Although the Tesla semi was originally designed for the American market, the Tesla is now planning production in Europe. This includes modifications such as a new front chassis to improve brake energy recovery and a larger cab frame that can transform the Semi into a sleeper cab. These changes are specifically tailored to European requirements and are intended to make the Semi more attractive for the European market.

Challenges and competition
The path to global production of the Tesla semi is not without its challenges, however. The Semi is currently still being manufactured in Tesla's Gigafactory in Nevada, with a new, dedicated production facility to be completed by 2025. Only then are Tesla, plans to increase annual production capacity to 50,000 units. So far Tesla only produced 140 Semis, 100 of which are used internally.
Competition from local manufacturers
While Tesla is working on scaling up its production, local manufacturers such as MAN have already taken the first steps towards electric trucks. MAN recently delivered its first electric tractor to the Dräxlmaier Group, but with a range of 400 km per charge, it lags behind the Tesla semi lags behind the semi. Nevertheless, this shows that the market for electric commercial vehicles is growing and Tesla must assert itself.
Future prospects
Elon Musk's confirmation that the Tesla semi is a global product shows Tesla's long-term vision. Especially in China, where several provinces are promoting zero-emission buses and trucks, the Tesla great opportunities. Local production in China could reduce costs and bring the Semi to market more quickly.
