US study: Tesla-Vehicles with the highest fatal accident rate

In a recent study by the American automotive website iSeeCars accident statistics for the years 2017 to 2022 were analyzed. The results show: Tesla-vehicles have a significantly higher fatal accident rate compared to other brands. But what do these figures really mean? And what factors could influence the statistics?

Highest accident rate for Tesla-vehicles

The iSeeCars study is based on data from the "US Fatality Analysis Reporting System" and examined accidents resulting in at least one fatality. The average for all car brands was 2.8 fatal accidents per billion kilometers driven. Tesla stood out with a value of 5.6 fatal accidents per billion kilometers which means that all 178 million kilometers there is a Tesla fatal accident.

Why are the figures so high?

Not a problem of vehicle design

The lead analyst at iSeeCars, Karl Brauer, emphasizes that the high accident figures are not necessarily related to the safety of the vehicles. "Most of these vehicles get excellent safety ratings," explains Brauer. Rather, the figures point to the driving behavior of the users.

Focus on driver behavior

Tesla-Drivers often appear to be more risky on the road. Higher speeds, the use of autopilot functionswhich may not be used correctly, as well as inattentive or risky driving behavior could influence the accident rate.

Model YThe most dangerous Tesla

Particularly critical was the Tesla Model Y was particularly critical. With a fatal accident rate of 10,6 it is almost five times higher than the average for SUVs. This puts it in sixth place among the most unsafe vehicles - surpassed only by models such as the Hyundai Venue or the Chevy Corvette. The Tesla Model S with an accident rate of 5,8 twice as high as the average.

What makes vehicles safe?

According to experts, the driver's behavior plays a decisive role. A focused, attentive driver who follows the traffic rules has the best chance of arriving safely, regardless of the type of vehicle.

Size differences as a risk

In the USA, large vehicles such as pickups pose an additional risk, especially for small cars. "Even with high-strength steel and airbags, it is difficult to overcome the laws of physics," says Brauer. In the event of an accident between a small vehicle and a large pickup truck, the smaller vehicle usually comes out on top.

Criticism of Tesla-door handles

Another point of criticism concerns Tesla's door handle mechanism. This has been criticized several times in the past, as rescue teams have had problems getting occupants out of the vehicle quickly in the event of an accident.

Conclusion: safety depends on driving style

The US study shows that Tesla-vehicles have a higher rate of fatal accidents than other brands. Nevertheless, Tesla's safety ratings are excellent, suggesting that driver behavior is a major factor. Drivers should consider the Use Autopilot features responsibly and be aware that safety ultimately depends on them.
