Tesla recently completed a significant transaction in which the company sold $499 million worth of bonds. These bonds are backed by solar equipment loans and were brought to market by Deutsche Bank. Details of the bond sale
The bond sale, which was divided into five tranches, received investment ratings from Fitch Ratings across the board. The top tranche has an interest rate of 4.83% and enjoyed high demand. In contrast to many other bonds, this debt is based on borrowers with already good credit ratings, which makes it more attractive to investors.
Tesla and solar bonds
This is not the first time that Tesla is relying on solar-based bonds. Since the acquisition of SolarCity in 2016, the company has regularly used such bonds to promote its solar business. The market for solar bonds has grown strongly since then, reaching a volume of 5 billion US dollars in 2024. Asset-backed debt as a strategy
In addition to solar bonds Tesla also regularly sells asset-backed and auto-loan-backed debt, i.e. debt collateralized by assets and auto loans. In 2024 Tesla raised around USD 2 billion through such bonds so far, including USD 783 million through the sale of auto lease bonds in October.
