The IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover offered a special highlight this year: the Tesla Semi. As Tesla accessories store, we were of course on site to get a picture of Tesla's first electric truck. Our colleague collected his impressions and we would like to share them with you here.
A truck that feels like a Tesla feels like
As soon as you get in, you realize that the Tesla Semi is no ordinary truck. It feels more like a Tesla car - if you already have a Tesla know exactly what we mean. Although there is a lot of hard plastic in the interior, it is the high-quality Tesla-hard plastic that looks modern and classy. You definitely don't feel like you're sitting in a conventional truck. Rather, it feels like the cockpit of an airplane or a racing car.
Innovative design and equipment
The cameras as an addition to the side mirrors take some getting used to at first glance. However, after a short time you get used to the new perspectives, especially in terms of safety in the blind spot. The generous storage space on the outside of the vehicle on both sides is also practical. Interesting for long-distance drivers: a sleeping cabin will be available in later models. There is certainly enough space, as the Tesla-employees confirmed to us on site. In future, it will be configurable - with or without a sleeping cabin, depending on requirements.
Technology and charging infrastructure
The currently exhibited Tesla Semi is primarily intended for the local traffic and daily transportation. Another highlight is the megachargerwhich is almost twice the size of the V4 Supercharger, but looks similar - only wider and higher. This enables fast charging even for heavy loads.
Driving impression and comfort
Our colleague had the opportunity to take a short spin around the hall. It was noticeable that the test vehicle was surprisingly loud. The noise insulation does not yet appear to have been finally optimized, as the engines could be clearly heard at a high pitch. As the test drive only took place indoors, it is difficult to say what effect this will have in real road traffic.
The driver's seat is comfortable and reminiscent of the seats from the Tesla car models. However, the seating comfort could be improved for truck drivers traveling long distances. Although there is suspension, the seating comfort does not quite meet the usual standards for long-distance drivers. On the positive side, the large and well-designed mirrorswhich offer excellent visibility.
Competition and market acceptance
The comparison with competitors such as Windrosewho presented a similar electric truck model. However, they did not allow test drives for truck drivers. A strategic mistake, in our opinion, because driver acceptance plays a decisive role in the purchase of commercial vehicles.
Our impression
The Tesla Semi impresses with its innovative design and the typical Tesla-feeling. It breaks with the conventions of truck design and offers a glimpse of the future of freight transportation. Although there are still some areas that can be improved - particularly in terms of noise insulation and seating comfort for long journeys - the Tesla once again shows that they are ready to break new ground.
