No electric buses: Tesla plans future with robotaxis

Elon Musk has recently confirmed that Tesla does not plan to build electric buses. This announcement was made in response to discussions about the challenges of electric buses in Norway. The question remains why Tesla is moving away from this option and what alternatives it could bring to urban transportation.

Norway's challenges with electric buses

Norway, a pioneer in electromobility, introduced a new fleet of electric buses in 2023, but they faced major problems during the harsh winter. Due to the cold, the battery loses efficiency as a lot of energy goes into heating the battery and the cabin. These losses can be partially reduced by using larger batteries or pre-heating the battery, but the Solaris Urbino buses in use do not have large enough batteries to compensate for these efficiency losses.

Interestingly, these buses are equipped with highly efficient heat pumps, but even that is not enough in Norway's icy winters. To help heat the buses, the country is even planning to install mini diesel generators, turning the vehicles into hybrids. An unexpected twist for a country that has made a name for itself with an impressive 92% market share for electric vehicles.

Why Tesla to do without electric buses

Elon Musk made it clear that Tesla sees no need for electric buses, which indicates a deeper strategy. Instead Tesla on his upcoming robotaxis. These are expected to be equipped with fully autonomous driving functions (FSD), which could fundamentally change public transportation. According to Musk, robotaxis are set to revolutionize transport in cities by maximizing efficiency and minimizing congestion. An exciting prediction: the cost of a ride in a robotaxi could even be less than that of a bus ticket.

In contrast to traditional cabs or buses, robotaxis could Tesla-Robotaxis could work more efficiently by analyzing traffic flows in real time and dynamically adapting their routes. This would not only optimize the flow of traffic, but also reduce energy consumption.

Robotaxis as the future of urban transportation

Tesla has not published any plans for bus-like vehicles in its corporate strategy, which is consistent with this latest announcement. Nevertheless, in the future there could be electric vans from Tesla that could be used for commercial purposes or small group transportation.

The biggest news, however, remains the imminent launch of Tesla's Robotaxi program. A prototype has already been spotted, and registration for the upcoming Robotaxi event has closed. It remains exciting to see how this technology could revolutionize urban transportation - without the need for electric buses.
