Tesla has once again proven that the company is a leader in the use of North American components. According to the latest information provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Tesla relies particularly heavily on components from the USA and Canada for its 2025 models - leaving traditional US manufacturers behind.
Strong North American quota for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y
The models Tesla Model 3 and Model Y lead the field: The Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variants of the Model 3 consist of 75% North American components, which puts them on a par with the Honda Ridgeline Sport. Similarly strong is the Model 3 Performance version and all variants of the Model Y with 70% US and Canadian components each.
Cybertruck - The most "American" pickup
The Tesla Cybertruck also has a high North American quota: 65% of its parts come from the USA and Canada. This puts the Cybertruck at the top of the list of pickups produced in North America and even outperforms established competitors such as the Ford F-150. By comparison, the traditional Ford F-150 uses only 45% locally sourced parts, while the e-version F-150 Lightning is at just 29%.
Comparison with other pickups
Other full-size pickups lag behind: the Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra both use 55% North American parts, while the EV versions of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra use only 36%. This discrepancy clearly shows Tesla's lead in local sourcing and shakes the image of traditional US manufacturers, who have so far positioned themselves as "Made in America".
Local sourcing also for Model S and Model X
Tesla remains true to its strategy for the luxury models too: the Model S consists of 65% parts from North America, while the Model X is 60% locally sourced. Even the Model X with the lowest ratio among Tesla's 2025 models is still far above many competitors that rely on international suppliers.
Conclusion and outlook
With the consistent North American production Tesla sets new standards in terms of sustainability and local value creation. The high proportion of parts from the region not only strengthens the regional market, but also provides Tesla also creates a competitive advantage.
