Tesla HW4: New cameras, new camera locations and improved processing power!

In the last few weeks, there's been a lot of new news about Tesla's new HW4. Thanks to Twitter user @GreenTheOnly, we're getting our first glimpses of Tesla's new hardware. The new HW4 will not only include a faster computer and higher resolution cameras, but also HD radar, plus new cameras and new camera placements are coming. Tesla's current cameras have a resolution of 1.2 megapixels. It is not yet known how high the new resolution will be, but numerous rumors suggest that Tesla could install 5-megapixel cameras.

The leak shows that Tesla's HW4 has a total of 12 camera ports on board, one of which is marked as a reserve. All current Teslas have a total of nine cameras. Three of them are forward-facing under the windshield, two on the fenders, two on the B-pillars, one in the rear and one for the interior. Most recently, it was revealed that Tesla plans to reduce the number of front-facing cameras from three to two. This is likely due to the higher resolution cameras. That means there could be as many as three additional cameras in the HW4, or perhaps four if you count the backup camera. According to Green, these three cameras appear to be destined for the front bumper of the vehicle, but it is not yet clear which direction they will face.

Judging by the names of the camera ports, Tesla also appears to be repositioning some of its cameras. The B-pillar cameras that look forward could be moved to the vehicle's fenders, presumably to provide a better view as well.Another leak last month revealed that Tesla is adding a heating element to the cameras in the vehicle's B-pillar to help with the formation of fog under the glass.

Rumor has it that the HW4 will be about 2-4x faster than the HW3. Some of that performance will undoubtedly go into processing the new camera images and the extra pixels. However, the extra power is critical as the HW3 approaches its processing limit. Green gave the technical specs of the new hardware chips, revealing that they will contain 20 cores instead of the previous 12, and will operate at a maximum of 2.35 GHz. Green also talked about the number of TRIP cores being increased from two to three and the maximum speed being 2.2 GHz.

According to Tesla boss Elon Musk, retrofitting the HW4 in older vehicles will not be possible. The power consumption is much higher in HW4 than in HW3. The shape is also completely different and will not fit into an earlier model without modifications.Tesla's previous FSD hardware upgrades were either camera upgrades or a computer upgrade, both of which were easily replaceable. However, the HW4 now includes additional cameras, new camera locations, a new computer form factor, and HD radar, making a retrofit unrealistic in every way.

Additionally, visibility is enhanced with a new HD radar.Tesla began 2021 with the Model 3 and the Model Yto remove radar from its vehicles. Later, the radar was also removed from the Model S and Model X and replaced with a vision-only system. However, with HW4, Tesla is reintroducing the radar with a high-definition radar called Phoenix. The HD radar is an advance over the conventional radar and allows Tesla to create a more accurate image with the radar alone. In addition, the radar will also get a heater to prevent any interruptions due to bad weather conditions.
